What an outstanding panel winding down the #AAJA20 conference. A great conversation about Asians for #BLM - a ton to unpack here and I just wish that white newsroom managers/leaders were listening to this conversation. ((sigh)) ImageImageImageImage
I'll keep saying this - white journalists: it is time to do the work & invest in journalists of color. I'm making it super easy for you right here:
"You don't have to get a masters degree in critical race theory. You can start by examining your own whiteness.
The thing about whiteness is that it gets to be invisible for white people." #AAJA20

#AAJA2020 Best thing I learned from good managers: Practicing empathy - learning what their team's goals are & also what makes them miserable. Good managers want their team to succeed, not just themselves. They're not the loudest voice in the room. - @sclary
#AAJA2020 Bad managers hoard talent. An honest, good manager wants a person on their team to succeed. I've learned so much from bad managers. - @marcelolprince
#AAJA20 The best managers I've had have been coaches. They give you the tools and the skills you need to get the job done. You let folks flourish - you give them the freedom to be who they are, rather than shape them yourself. - @juliachanb

Attending the "Pro Tips for Moving into Management" panel at #AAJA20. Crucial point from @AshleyAlvarado: It's important to differentiate between leadership and management. You can be a leader without being a manager.
What both @geostanley and @AshleyAlvarado look at when it comes to leaders in the newsroom:
- They solve problems
- They listen to the audience
- They think creatively about how to reach new readers

#AAJA20
Love that @AshleyAlvarado looks to "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" for management advice.

She quoted this part: "The man is the head, but the woman is the neck and she can turn the head any way she wants." You want to be the neck.

it's really amazing to see how much the format of digital journalism conferences and events allows them to be much more accessible to a much larger group of people.

you also cannot deny the enthusiasm of large groups of #AAJA20 journalists who clearly miss each other a lot.
There is an #aaja20 first-time attendee this year all the way from New Zealand!!

The opening keynote just now with @NialaBoodhoo and @drsanjaygupta really addressed what so many AAPI journalists are thinking about and working on.

I'm so proud to be a member of @aaja.
If you are attending #AAJA20 and have questions for me about biz journalism, feature writing, or anything else, feel free to DM or message me on Pathable.

I'm also moderating an incredible panel on Thursday, August 13, at 4pm. It's on Reporting From and For AAPI Communities!

We can remind ppl of seriousness, the toll, but convey as close to solutions as available in simple terms: #WearAMask #SocialDistancing etc. - @drsanjaygupta

AAJA has contested elections this year! As a former AAJA Nat’l Prez, I know how much time, energy & experience is required to lead a beloved nonprofit, which is why I’m excited to endorse @juliachanb for VP of Civic Engagement! #aaja20 #aajafamily #aaja 1/6 Image
Julia served on the natl board, and I saw how she handled debates firsthand. She openly listened to other POV’s, but was never afraid to speak her mind. She wasn’t biased towards one group or another; she cared about AAJA as a whole. #aaja20 #aajafamily #aaja 2/6 Image
In fact, she was one of the few national board members to fly to HK and attend @AAJAAsia chapter’s @n3conference. We are all volunteers at the end of the day, but Julia continually proves that she invests the time and $$ to follow through. #aaja20 #aajafamily #aaja 3/6
