In the same context, SOHR reported last week that US forces prepare to return to Raqqa and enter the 17th Division base. This comes after their withdrawal more than 3 years ago. Image

1. #Syria: No recent reports of Turkish attacks beyond the reported bombing of #Managh airbase near #Afrin and harassing fire in the #Darbasiyah district. A review of the Turkish media found nothing in the three main English daily papers. The Turkish language Ankara Gazeti

1. On #Ukraine: Presidents #Biden & #Zelensky's readouts had no specific mention of #Crimea. IMO Putin is unlikely to accept a result that loses #Sevastopol that Russia had a lease to before the invasion. The fact that it is not mentioned specifically could be a positive sign.

1. An observation: In recent weeks we have witnessed a build-up of forces on the Euphrates southern bank in what appeared to be preparation to move on the Conoco and Omar gas and oil fields. We supported the SDF taking these fields, but that wasn't their idea. Controlling these
2. Sunni Arab areas is a heavy lift for the SDF that at the time was made up of Kurds and a modest percentage of Turkmen, Arabs and Syrian Christian forces. Unless we allow the AANES to develop the oil resource, that will require @USTreasury licenses due to the sanctions,
3. we have to realize that keeping the oil from Assad, Iran & their Russian backers is a challenge for the over-burdened SDF facing imminent attacks from Turkey on a large front. We need to grant someone a license to do business in Syria.

1. Why can we see the Turkish Drones over Idlib and not over Kobane on @flightradar24? He's why I think that is and why the civilians in #AANES may want to check this out. When a drone or any other aircraft flies, it can transmit a radio signal via ADS-B receivers can pick up.
2. Typically, military aircraft don't all this to give away their position. But some still leak enough radio data to be seen. I live near a big US Air Force base and I can say from experience our folks know how to deal with this. If they want to not be seen, they won't be.
3. For whatever reason, the Turk drones over Idlib remain visible. I surmise it is because the anti Assad

Protests continue in #Manbij for the 3rd day today, as locals demonstrate against the #SDF's policy of forced conscription.

The tensions have turned deadly this time, with 6+ dead.

Nearby, #Turkey artillery has also struck #SDF positions - intriguingly leading to an #SAA death. ImageImage
Beyond the tensions that #SDF conscription has caused within Arab-majority communities, the financial implications are of particular significance.

The last I heard 3 weeks ago, the #AANES has 300,000+ people on the payroll (civilian & armed) -- and revenue is shrinking, fast.
The U.S -- first under #Obama, then #Trump & now #Biden -- positioned the #SDF not just as the frontline vs. #ISIS, but also as a rival to #Assad's regime.

To match that expectation, the #SDF needed to grow & achieve Arab balance -- BUT we're now actively removing its revenue.
