So, an "emergency" law that is an instrument of discrimination and high handedness continues to be imposed indefinitely in #Nagaland,
even after 17 Naga coal miners recently joined the long list of innocents killed by the armed forces.
Modeled after the colonial-era Ordinance to suppress the Quit India movement, #AFSPA was first enforced in 1958 by Pandit Nehru to battle the Naga separatists in the then undivided state of Assam.

The then Home Minister, Pt. GB Pant (Congress) explained the reason for the Bill:
"This is a very simple measure. It only seeks to protect the steps that the armed forces might have to take in disturbed areas."

(a "simple measure" when an army personnel can fire on mere suspicion and no prosecution or legal proceedings shall be instituted, except with the

Old saying: Way to Hell is paved with good intentions.
Some advocating removal of #AFSPA as a 'goodwill' gesture, same ecosystem advocated removal of #AFSPA even in valley before 2016 violence.
Keep #AFSPA, ensure it is not misused by anyone.
Probe & act in a transparent manner.
Some are passing judgment without all facts being in public domain. Let facts emerge, including details of intelligence inputs & operations.
Did vehicle not stop when directed to? Did occupants flee when challenged? Let Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe reveal all facts 1st.
In the past reported forces being removed from pockets of 'south Kashmir' as a 'goodwill gesture.' There were headlines too. But soon terrorists exploited the vacuum & more soldiers were killed trying to reestablish rule of law in those pockets.
Goodwill gestures wont bring peace

The paradoxical tag.

Lost count of the times I’ve been asked how ‘dangerous’ my homeland is. In my initial years of studying outside Nagaland, downplaying this stereotype was a trait I carefully nurtured. I was insanely frustrated and ashamed of the ‘tag’ our state bore. (1/5)
Over the years, I’ve come to realise how insanely naive it was on my part. Coming from a place of privilege, from the comfort of my home, I was disgustingly oblivious to the wider spectrum of the underlying issues taking place. Taking place in my own backyard. (2/5)
Today I am saddened but not ashamed anymore, to acknowledge that, yes, it is indeed a ‘dangerous’ place and one is right to tag it a ‘disturbed area’.

But on what context? That it is a disturbed area to the people of Nagaland. (3/5)

Amnesty International India urges the government to urgently address concerns of impunity for alleged human rights violations by removing the requirement under the #AFSPA for executive permission for prosecuting soldiers, pending its repeal.

economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-…
The Ministry of Defence in response to the Central Information Commission stated that there are no procedures, norms or standards in deciding prosecution sanction under the Armed Forces (Jammu and Kashmir) Special Powers Act (AFSPA). (2/5)
The Ministry's response only confirms the truth, that AFSPA is an abusive law that feeds a cycle of impunity for human rights violations. To date, not a single member of the security forces deployed in the state has been tried for human rights violations in a civilian court.(3/5)

Tweet thread on #Kashmir #Article370 #Constitutional changes.
I fear the travails and tribulations of the people of #JammuAndKashmir will continue for a very long time before they get better. The changes wrought on 5 August 2019 by #ModiSarkar2 are driven by ideology and politics
They are not driven by pragmatic considerations of what is good for the people of that troubled region of India. #ModiSarkar2 argues that with the special status gone development beckons and a new dawn starts. What they don't explain is what about the previous regime prevented it
Much will depend on how the changes are implemented but the very manner in which they were pushed through Parliament, the various sleights of hand and specious legal tricks, and the deployment of troops to #lockdown Kashmir - all these bode ill for the future
