Flew home from #AGU19 today, and OH MY LORD, THE VIEWS. This is why we have window seats!

Be forewarned: a data dump of aerial volcanic goodness follows in this thread.

#AlwaysAWindowSeat #RaiseTheShades
I few out of San Jose, so started with some nice views of the south bay and the Hayward fault.
Then it was north, past Sacramento. Years ago, an friend told me husband to "try not to shoot beer out of your nose when people refer to Sutter Buttes as a volcano".

But I gained a whole new appreciation for it today.

This is what a devastating earthquake in California would look like 👉🏽 I went to Christchurch, New Zealand, which suffered a devastating quake in 2011, to get a peek at what lies in California’s future when a big quake returns to our state. Some lessons: latimes.com/california/sto…
• The “recovery” from a big one will be far harder than we all imagined. Hopes for a quick, full recovery are fantasies and set us up for disappointment. Know that a big quake will leave forever scars; and the more we can do before the quake, the better latimes.com/california/sto…
• The economic consequences will last much longer than you think; perhaps generations. Folks in Christchurch told me Californians should identify, now, areas we know could be heavily damaged — and think about the rebuild before disaster strikes. Lessons: latimes.com/california/sto…

Right now 28,000 scientists are at the #AGU19 conference in San Francisco:How far do they fly to SF&back? 285million km=1.9x Earth-Sun=🌎🛫🌞🛬🌎.That's a big carbon footprint. Why we can't decarbonise @theAGU without virtual participation?White paper: github.com/milankl/Carbon… 1/5
How big is big? The travel carbon footprint of 24,000 presenters at #AGU19 is 69,300tCO2e, 2.9tCO2e per scientist. Why? Despite 63% of attendees are from North America, intercontinental flights are 75% of total emissions: Scientists commuting between NA, East Asia and Europe. 2/5
How can we reduce the carbon footprint? Train&Bus? No, assuming everyone within 1,500km from SF doesn't fly, saves 2%. Other location? Yes, but limited. DC would save 8%, Chicago is nearly optimal and saves 12%. Hawaii would increase the emissions by 42%. 3/5

Time-lapses 🎥 taken from space can help track how Earth’s polar ❄️ regions are changing, watching as glaciers retreat and accelerate and ice sheets melt over decades. #AGU19 #AGUCryo

Thanks to @USGS/@NASA_Landsat’s 🛰 long data record, we can watch Alaskan glaciers ❄️ shift and flow every year since 1972. Columbia Glacier, which was relatively stable in the 1970s, has since retreated rapidly as the climate continues to warm 🌡.
@USGS @NASA_Landsat The Malaspina Glacier has pulsed and spread and pulsed. The flashes đź’Ą and imperfect frames result from the need for cloud-free images đź“· from each year, and the technology limitations of the early generation satellites.

Going to @theAGU meeting in San Francisco? Join #ShakeAlert for “Automatic for the People": Warning Systems and Planning Scenarios to Reduce Risks to Natural Hazards. (Wed 12/11 - PA32B, oral session 1020 am – 12:20 pm & PA33F, posters 1:40 – 6 pm) #AGU19 Image
The scientific and technological dimensions of risk reduction are only a part of the story; people are a critical part of acting on available information. What can be done seconds before earthquake shaking and in years or decades before the next big event occurs? Image

Since it's #AGU19 soon, here's a conference reminder: using the word "sexy" to describe any aspect of anyone's research (even your own) makes a lot of people feel uncomfortable and creeped out, even if you don't intend any harm.
There's tons of other words you can use (like "intriguing" or "exciting") that get your point across just as well (or probably even better) without the unpleasantness. If you're struggling, find a thesaurus.
Also, your "make [science word] great again" remark is flippantly obnoxious to a lot of people who are threatened or harmed by the current administration. I get that you want to make jokes, but try to find some that are actually funny and don't disrespect marginalized folks.
