➡️Yes, this combo improved Sxs & reduced CVD death & hosp rates (click here)
💯Correct!

⚡️The HYD/ISDN combo was tested in the A-HeFT trial in an all-AA population with HFrEF.

⚡️More than 80% also had T2D & ~34% had renal insufficiency.

⭐️The vasodilator combo showed improvements in Sxs & reductions in hosp & CVD death rates. Image
3 recently published studies show pts with HF, T2D, & CKD would benefit from a drug in which class?

Tons of chatter about the new prescription omega 3 data coming forth. Lots of takes about the study designs, n3 formulations, differences across populations, variation in comparator groups. All important ?- but I think there's a bigger 🐘in the room. #cardiotwitter #lipids #AHA20
Intervening with n3 fatty acids is unlike other drugs bc they are a nutrient. There is no placebo for n3s in the sense that:

1) you have questions about what is the ideal comparator; typically isocaloric oil.

2) you don't have an unexposed group - there are endogenous levels.
There are numerous reasons for n3 enthusiasm, but playing by evidence hierarchy, the top reason is that meta-analyses of cohorts demonstrate that higher blood levels of n3s result in reduced risk of fatal CHD jamanetwork.com/journals/jamai…

NEJM published 2 RCTs of #AFib ablation vs AF drugs.
The rub was that the ablation was done EARLY in the course.
Practice had been to try drugs first then do ablation.
EARLY AF and STOP AF studied the procedure early.
#AHA20 Thread and my column >>
Both trials used the Medtronic cryoballoon system.
Medtronic participated in funding both trials.
STOP AF was 100% an industry trial. See pic.
Early AF had funding from many other sources
Background -- numerous trials have shown that AF ablation using different techniques (freezing or burning) can reduce AF episodes relative to meds.
In CABANA -- the largest outcome trial, AF ablation reduced AF but had no sig effect on clinical outcomes like stroke or death.

💸Pay gap for Black Americans is 59 cents vs $1 for White Americans
🛑Same as 1978!
Racial differences haven't changed in all this time
At every level of education, gap persists: income and education matter but race overrides this ImageImageImageImage
Racial Segregation is real #AHA20 and was part of racial regulation
💔2/3 of all Black Americans live in very low opportunity neighborhoods
💔This access to opportunity (or lack thereof) is a driver of racial ethnic differences ImageImageImageImage
The consequences of lack of opportunities increases all level of stressors and the consequences are real:

▶️Premature aging
▶️Earlier onset of chronic diseases

For those interested in some science after much excitement 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 this past week, thrilled to share our latest in @CircAHA (simultaneous pub w/ #AHA20)

Why do women with premature menopause have ⬆️ risk of CVD?

ahajournals.org/doi/abs/10.116…

👇 (thread)
We previously described diverse accelerated cardiovascular aging in women with premature menopause (jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…), a “risk-enhancing factor” for ASCVD

Mechanisms underlying these associations remain unclear 🤔
In genome-wide association studies of age at natural menopause (nature.com/articles/ng.34…), ~2/3 of identified genetic loci map to DNA damage repair enzymes

➡️ implies women with natural premature menopause may be genetically predisposed to accumulate DNA mutations 🧬🧬

Following up on @EADHistory's thread we want to share our work in Marketing the History Major from #AHA20 #s279. From 2013 to 2016 we had a 27% decline in major numbers; since 2016 we are up 12% for majors and up 20% when you include minors with majors. 1/19
We currently have the most juniors we've had since 2013. From 2013 to 2016 there were 39% fewer HIST majors reaching junior standing @UofOklahoma. Since 2016, there are 42% more HIST majors reaching junior standing. We're adding (avg) 2+ HIST grads, 9 majors every spring 2/19
Our work in reversing this decline has 3 aspects: curricular changes; supporting professional advising; and targeted data outreach.
Curricular: in 2009 we added 2 majors-only courses to help create community among our students + bolster their skills. 3/19

I was part of the #AHA20 #s279 on Marketing the History major. It was a great conversation w/ Paul Deslandes (Vermont), Sarah Olzawski (@OUHistDept), Darién Davis (Middlebury), and @justin_behrend (@GeneseoHistory). Here’s a recap of @LMU_History's efforts ... 1/26
At @LMU_History, we peaked in our number of majors in spring 2011, but then saw a decline of 60%+ – a function of national trends, revisions to our University Core Curriculum that drastically cut history’s presence in it, and the creation of new majors in @LMUBellarmine. 2/26
But after hitting our low in fall 2017, we’ve seen an increase of 35% in majors, an increase of 120% in minors, and strong enrollments across all courses. How did we reverse course? A combination of curricular reform, programming and publicity efforts, and recruitment. 3/26

#Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated in 2015 that "black people are oppressed, disrespected & humiliated" in the U.S. Hey all you flag-waving #American
#patriots, are you gonna let him get away with that!? Why not support #reparations to prove him wrong? timesofisrael.com/iranian-leader…
And, yes, Khamenei is a hypocrite & has no moral authority to condemn the violent suppression of "minorities" when #Baha'is & other religious minorities in #Iran are systematically killed, jailed, excluded from society, denied passports, etc. But he ain't wrong about Black people
As #Twitterstorians and #BlkTwitterstorians know, it was this kind of geopolitical propaganda from the #USSR that shamed U.S. Cold War liberals into supporting the end of Jim Crow (long before U.S. popular opinion turned on this issue). #Reparations may come the same way. #AHA20

Settling in for what looks like a great History of Capitalism panel at #AHA20.
Amy Edwards is offering a fascinating look at the role the UK media played in the spread of Thatcher’s “popular capitalism” — Page Three girls promoting stocks, a dumbed down “Money Page” to build up investors, BBC programs like Money Spinner, etc. #AHA20
Edwards talks about the spread of financial game shows and board games — including this one from Andrew Lloyd Webber! #AHA20
