2/5: We have always seen grades as just one element that each student has to offer and made assessments based on their full range of personal achievements and qualities. 💜
3/5: If your grades have changed as a result of the Government announcement confirming that teacher assessments will be used to establish grades and you would like to study for a prestigious @LondonU degree in the evenings, we will find the right course for you.
I'm so glad that students have received the U-Turn they deserve, after such a stressful and upsetting time for many. I am, however, concerned at how Universities will manage this in practice. #ALevelsResults
For example, if a Uni genuinely cannot give places to everyone who now will have the required grades (because of accommodation, number of teaching staff, need to social distance etc) will this be a breach of contract? Grounds for denied students to take legal action?
Or do Unis have clauses to protect them from this? Can they force deferrals?
Will Unis go over "capacity" w/out increasing staff numbers or pay, and further worsen the current workload crisis and number of insecure staff?
Will there be enough support services for students?

This is a victory for all the young people who have been marching, demonstrating & lobbying MPs backed up by so many parents, teachers & headteachers.

Following two major u-turns, there must now be full assurances from the Gov’t that decisions impacting young people will not be made retrospectively and provide much more advance notice of whether this system will continue for next year’s results.
Clarity is also needed for the thousands of BTEC students whom are not included in this latest apology and announcement. The Gov’t must ensure their decision is the same all over and does not further stigma experienced by BTEC students and leave them behind.

Most people now think the #AlevelResults should not stand, whether the Govt will recognise that or not is another matter. But we shouldn't blame #algorithms for this huge injustice - like most technology they are neither good nor bad in themselves
And I don't blame those who wrote the #algorithm I do think #engineers (like me) & #datascientists should take a 'do no harm' oath like doctors, but currently there is no framework for that & they were presumably working to a spec
