🔴 Multiple people were injured when an Amtrak train carrying 243 people derailed after hitting a dump truck in Kansas City, Missouri.

A witness told The Daily Beast the event looked like a ‘mass casualty event’ but no deaths have been confirmed.

The Southwest Chief Train 4 was on its way from Los Angeles to Chicago when it struck a dump truck. The force of the accident caused the train to derail in the town of Mendon around 1:42pm on Monday, according to Amtrak.

Forse vi sorprenderete ma negli #StatiUniti, nel trasporto ferroviario passeggeri c'è ancora un monopolista, #AMTRAK che di fatto gestisce il servizio ferroviario.

I passeggeri sulla principale linea #AV americana - #Acela (anche se la velocità massima è molto inferiore all'Italia) sono solo 3,5 milioni (solo #Italo ne faceva 20 milioni nel 2019).

L'#Italia è stato il primo paese ad aprire alla concorrenza nel settore ferroviario ad alta velocità.
C'era stata qualche esperienza precedente, ma solo per i treni a lunga percorrenza non ad alta velocità in altri paesi.

Cosa è successo in questi 9 anni di #liberalizzazione italiana?
In primo luogo abbiamo avuto un incremento della domanda (+120%) grazie anche alla discesa dei prezzi (-35-40%).
La domanda è cresciuta anche grazie alla maggiore e migliore offerta di treni.
Nel complesso tra #Italo e le #Frecce sono stati acquistati e messi in servizio più di nuovi 100 treni (da oltre 450 posti l'uno).
Dopo l'Italia è stato il turno della #CoreadelSud che ha aperto a fine del 2016 e da questo anno anche la #Spagna vede la competizione.

There’s much to love about @Amtrak’s proposed new service map. Over the past decade I worked in the #Appropriations Committee to secure millions of dollars to extend the Ethan Allen from Rutland to #BTV. The construction work making that expansion will be completed this year.
On the #Appropriations Committee I’ve always made #Amtrak a funding priority. We also secured Obama-era ARRA funds to make major investments in the #Vermonter route to increase its speeds. These prior federal investments make the #VT expansions Amtrak has laid out possible.
My 2016 #preclearance legislation set the table for extending the Vermonter to #MTL & I look forward to working with Pres. Biden, @Amtrak & Canadian officials to finally restore that service. Connecting #VT & Montreal by rail will offer an important boost to Vermont’s economy.
