🚨 JUST OUT: The 2022 STAATUS Index

Despite a new administration, attacks against our community continue to increase, reminding us that racism against #AsianAmericans is deeply embedded in US history, culture & institutions, and have been for over 150 years.

🧵 of some findings
1/ Compared to 2021, Americans in 2022 are nearly TWICE as likely to say that #AsianAmericans are at least partly responsible for #COVID19: 11% vs 21%
2/ Alarmingly, in 2022, 33% Americans believe that #AsianAmericans are MORE LOYAL to their country of origin than to the United States, up from 20% in 2021.

During #APAHM, I wanted to share some thoughts on where my mind was at since #StarringJohnCho launched 5 years ago. I didn't have the words. So I started to reflect. While I am filled with both hope and fear, I am driven by urgency most of all. Here's where I'm at. Thread coming. ImageImage
If you're just catching up, see below for a 2016 @nytimes article about what #StarringJohnCho is and how it captured the world's attention for a little while. nytimes.com/2016/05/11/mov…
In 2016, #StarringJohnCho started off with a hypothesis that people cared about Asian American representation as much as I did. Since then, we've not only seen indie hits and Oscar wins from Asian American voices, but also seen a larger welcoming of Asian narratives in Hollywood.

#APAHM Thread: #StopAsianHate is meaningless until we acknowledge white men as the architects of anti-Asian racism, & the blueprints they use to divide the Asian community & sabotage progress. 1/

(Don't repost my art. RTs appreciated. Support my work👉patreon.com/joshualuna)
Understanding anti-Asian racism means connecting its history in the US with its history in Asia, instead of treating them separately. US imperialism, war, & colonization abroad directly informs the racism AsAms experience because the goal is the same: divide, conquer, & kill. 2/
White men used war to split Korea & Vietnam in two, & divide AsAms the same way. One blueprint of the U.S.'s domestic anti-Asian strategy is the Mixed Marriage Policy of 1942-1943. Implemented during Japanese Internment, it gave certain Asians special exemptions to leave camp. 3/

Happy #APAHM! Today we're hearing from astronomer Munazza Alam about her work, contemplating the cosmos, and inspiring young people in STEM! on.natgeo.com/3bXij4W
QUESTION 1: How did you become interested in astrophysics and astronomy, and what inspired you to pursue this career path?

What does it mean to belong somewhere? #APAHM on.natgeo.com/3vkZHDn
"That question of belonging is at the heart of our essay exploring how Asian Americans across generations navigate the balancing act of their identities and carve out a place for themselves in this country," writes Elaine Teng (@elteng12) email.nationalgeographic.com/H/2/v600000179… Image
Elaine and photographer Haruka Sakaguchi (@hsakagphoto) met with over a dozen families in the Atlanta area, the site of the deadliest anti-Asian hate crime in the last year, to ask what belonging means to them, and what their American Dream looks like.

In 1874, J.L. Chow opened Chow Chow Laundry at 904 Elm Street. He was the first person of Asian descent to be listed in the city directories. By 1891, 41/49 laundries in Dallas were Chinese-owned.
Fueled by decades of bigotry, a propaganda campaign was initiated against Chinese laundries by White competitors.

The Dallas Daily Times Herald ran an editorial in 1894: Danger in Inferior Laundries: Dallas Customers Cannot Be Too Careful Where They Send Their Soiled Clothing.

Ben was a guard at a homeless facility where it happened.

He saw my story & ID’d Thompson right away (1/5)

#stopasianhate Image
Ben says if Thompson was beind bars & not on mental health diversion in 2020 — the double stabbing of 2 Asian seniors on Market this week would not have happened.

Mr. Thompson refused to show up at his arraignment today.

So I asked Chesa at court...

…the DA why he blamed the judge for Mr. Thompson’s mental health diversion when as district attorney he could have objected to it.

He side-stepped my question & gave a definition of what mental health diversion is. (3/5)

Today is the start of Asian Pacific American Heritage month, and I ask you (everyone not just AAPIs) to do at least one action. It’s been a tough year for AAPIs. Hear Us, See Us for who we are. I made this #AAPIHeritageMonth guide with ideas to do. Please share. #APAHM (THREAD)
WATCH: I often get asked how to learn about AAPI history. I’ll admit I don’t know as much as I should too. Please set aside time to watch this PBS series on the history of Asian Americans. AAPI history is American history, for all of us to learn(2/20) pbs.org/weta/asian-ame…
READ: There are a lot of good books and people should recommend others. One that is really informative about Asian American history is Erika Lee’s THE MAKING OF ASIAN AMERICA (3/20) amazon.com/Making-Asian-A…

Growing up as an adopted Asian American, I've always found difficulty making sense of my identity.

As #APAHM comes to a close, here is my attempt to articulate just that and what I’m doing about it – a thread.

#AAPI #AAPIHM @TwitterAsians #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth ImageImage
My name is Annie. A lot of people assume Wu is my last name when they find me on social media since it's @Annie_Wu_22.

My last name is actually Henry, which is the last name of my adoptive family. They chose to incorporate my Chinese last name as my middle name. ImageImage
I was adopted as a baby and haven't been back to Asia since. I was adopted into a white family in a VERY white town.

Growing up, I never felt different – even though I was usually one of the only non-white children. In fact, I don't even think I realized this most of the time. ImageImageImage

My mom said we should speak Thai in public so we don’t get targeted for speaking Mandarin and I think it’s so sweet that she’s nice enough to believe that these stupid fucking racists can differentiate between Asian languages
Since this is getting some traction, please consider supporting @CAPEUSA this #APAHM in their mission to increase Asian representation in entertainment giveinmay.org/capeusa #RepresentationMatters
Most of us aren’t violent racists, but we all have biases and blind spots in our knowledge of the world. Let’s all listen with an open mind (you don’t have to agree or debate) so we can at least treat each other like human beings. Leave someone better off than when you met them.

Like many, I’ve had some extra fee time these days... After rebinging @theofficenbc and #theofficereunion I was inspired.

A thread of Trump’s handling of the #coronavirus (#COVID19) pandemic, as told by Michael Scott. #TheOffice
Way back in 2018, Trump decided it was a good idea to disassemble the #Pandemic Response Team – created by the Obama administration in case there was “an airborne disease that is deadly.” This can’t go wrong! #thiswaspreventable
Trump does nothing to replace this. He plays golf and insults people on Twitter – just the normal things that presidents do right?

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is a time to take pride in and reflect on the many contributions of the #AAPI community throughout our nation’s history. #APAHM
As communities across this country continue responding to the #COVID19 pandemic, far too many Asian Americans are facing racism & xenophobia. One thing we know for sure about this virus: it doesn't care what your race or ethnicity is.
During #APAHM—and every month—let's be kind to one another & remember: we're all in this together.

Thread: For #APAHM I'd hoped to announce the release date of AMERICANIZASIAN, a book collecting my online comic strips about Filipino American & Asian American identity & experiences, but since my publisher @ImageComics doesn't seem comfortable publishing it, I need your help. 1/
When I pitched AMERICANIZASIAN, a Partner compared it to a female cartoonist's collection of political cartoons—many of which are anti-Trump—& described both of our books as "angry" & with "no story for people to relate to," implying her book was a mistake & mine would be too. 2/
The Partner—a white man—said my work should be "more positive" & implied that my AsAm experience would be more relatable if it was like PEN15, a show that reminds his half-Japanese wife of her childhood (the protagonist is half-white, half-Japanese—I'm neither, I'm Filipino). 3/

Quite intrigued to see my @23andMe report shift recently from "96% Chinese/3% Filipino" to a new reading of "98.9% Taiwanese/1.1% Vietnamese," with my Viet ancestry projected 5-8 gens back.

My theory: Rival Asian time travelers in a love triangle with my great-great-grandmother.
Cool to see actual evidence of steampunk time travel romance/adventure in my genetic history, no wonder I keep alternating day to day between being hungry for adobo and hungry for pho
(Yes, Guangdong is mentioned in there but that's the only Mainland region listed, the other 12 regions listed are all in Taiwan, go figure. My prior report just said "YO YOU'RE GENERIC CHINESE, FOO, but here, have some Filipino on the side")

Nan-Hui Jo is a devoted single mom and immigrant Korean American who fought "child abduction" charges for fleeing an abusive relationship with her daughter. 1/5 #APAHM
In 2014, Nan-Hui was tried for child abduction and served time in jail after being convicted. Despite a history of domestic violence, Nan-Hui's ex partner was granted full custody of her daughter. 2/5
Immigration officials and police failed to protect Nan-Hui from domestic violence and inform her she could apply for legal immigration status under the Violence Against Women Act. Because of her legal status, she was immediately detained by ICE after being released from jail. 3/5

Okay folks, the social media embargo has been lifted, and I can finally tell you how👏much👏of👏a👏thoroughly👏life👏changing👏moment it was to watch Randall Park, @aliwong & @michaelgolamco’s absolutely brilliant, absolutely hilarious new romcom #AlwaysBeMyMaybe. 🤯🤩🥳

#APAHM
#AlwaysBeMyMaybe needs to be spoken of in the same sentence as MASTER OF NONE, FRESH OFF THE BOAT, CRAZY RICH ASIANS, TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE, SEARCHING and WARRIOR as game-shifters for Asian Americans in pop culture.

Only in some key ways, it's even more important.
That's because #AlwaysBeMyMaybe doesn't just *reinhabit* a genre in which historically we, as Asian Americans, have been erased, as FOTB, CRA, To All the Boys and Searching all did.

It fundamentally challenges and reinterprets it.
If you will, it reverse-colonizes it.

I was deeply honored to be given an award by @yuhline this weekend and only wished I could’ve been in New York to receive it (but I wish even more she’d been my rep when I lived down there, of course I think she’d have had to have run when she was elementary school) #APAHM

In case you’re curious, here’s my brief acceptance speech (delivered on my behalf by @marialho) for the amazing award @YuhLine presented to me in absentia!
