Here, #econtwitter, is a photo (replete with San Diego Marriott poolside lounge chair backdrop) of the AEA budget for FY 2020. I picked it up at the sparsely attended business meeting at #ASSA2020.

Although printed in black, there's some serious red ink. Let's explore.
The AEA operating budget was in the black five years ago. This year, they expect to spend $1.23 for every $1 in operating revenue. What gives?

Revenues (+7% in nominal terms 2015-2020) are not keeping up with expenses (+35.5%).
You know how the AEA is actually doing important stuff, like the RCT registry, @LetoC's ombuds office, workshops, and so forth?

"Program and activity" expenses are up 85% over five years. The association is dipping into its bank account to pay for them.

Economics has made progress in the year since its problems with sexism and racism burst into the open. But there is still a long way to go.
@jimtankersley @jeannasmialek and I report from #ASSA2020
nytimes.com/2020/01/07/bus…
This year’s conference certainly *looked* different: No hotel-room interviews! Office hours with the ombudsperson! Even lines for the ladies room.
Whether that translates into deeper, more lasting change remains to be seen.
And on one level, this has been the easy part. It’s one thing to pass a code of conduct; it’s another to enforce it. It’s one thing to agree diversity matters; it’s another to hold departments accountable for their progress.

Best #ASSA2020 moment? At airport, overhearing man on phone saying, “we really need to focus on more women students—the job market for women economists is excellent.”
Now, I find that a bit frustrating—shouldn’t we always nurture all kinds of students? But—excellent that incentives work on economics professors.
And, thank you to all the #AEA & other leaders who are elevating the need for inclusion in the profession @AEACSWEP

Zingales’ recommendations for economics from this #ASSA2020 panel; I’d add to this spot-on list that the profession needs also to explicitly focus on being more inclusive ⁦@zingalesImage
In answer to my question, he said that mite inclusion within the discipline would likely bring economist’s preferences more in line with public
And, @snaidunl added that diversity needs to include diversity of views. Yes!

At #ASSA2020 panel by economists for inclusive prosperity, Zingales points out how economists preferences differ from rest of Americans 1/2 Image
Worth pointing out that there are also divergences in views of economists by race and gender, see researchgate.net/publication/32… So, it’s even more important for the profession to be more inclusive @zingales_it
And, @rodrikdani ends this session by calling for economists to be humble about our knowledge limits

So @BetseyStevenson and have I spent the past few years writing a new Principles of Economics textbook that, we hope, represents our generation's understanding of the field we all know and love.

And after a long gestation, our triplets are finally ready to join the world!
@BetseyStevenson We’re super excited by our new books & hope you'll love them too.

Join us to celebrate with champagne & cake, the essential alcohol/sugar pick-me-up that we all need at #ASSA2020.

Stop by from today 4:30-5:30 at the Macmillan booth (#218) in the exhibitor hall in the Mariott.
@BetseyStevenson If you're wondering: Am I invited? The answer is yes. You are my Twitter friend & I want to celebrate with you. Come say g'day.

And if you're an instructor looking for a review copy, stop by & we'll hook you up. Read the book on the plane home, assign it when you land #ASSA2020

Hey #EconTwitter! As some of you know, my family is in the wine importing and sales business. (Quigley Fine Wines - @Quigleywines).

They are opening a beautiful Tasting Room in San Diego! The *very same* San Diego where #ASSA2020 will be held! Soft opening will be DURING ASSA!
We'd love to have #EconTwitter help us open it up!

The DEAL: Drop by 4-7pm FRI-SUN (1/3-1/5) of #ASSA2020 with your name tag from the conference. Do the tasting & you'll get a free glass of your fav. wine from the flight.

Perfect pre-dinner activity.

BONUS- Tell the person serving you that know me, and you might get an embarrassing story about me.

You might also get to meet my parents, who, incidentally, are *delightful* people.

No matter what, you'll get to try some really good wine and probably learn something.

Skipping #ASSA2020 this year, so instead I'm cruising paper abstracts. Here's one from a panel about how financial crises fuel political radicalization: A cut to housing subsidies in the UK depressed turnout and increased support for the Leave vote in 2016 aeaweb.org/conference/202…
(Along with, you know, increasing homelessness, evictions, and bankruptcies; all of which forced local governments to incur costs that offset savings from cutting subsidies in the first place)
Oy, this might turn into a thread. People often oppose immigrants out of concern for overloading public schools, but a study in Florida found that immigrants generally improve the academic performance of native-born kids:
