Imani playing both parts of a 2 person conversation:

P1: I really want to pray over you! I really want to pray that you have a normal healthy life.

P2: no, I’m cool thanks.

P1: don’t you wanna have a normal life normal day? I just ...
P2: I mean truth be told the most abnormal part of my day is people clocking my crutches and thinking they can pray over me to heal me, so if you left, I’d be fine.

P1: (looks confused)

P2: ...

P2: okay byeeeee!!!

So I'm at a physics conference this week in Lecce, Italy. Some of you wonder how that works given that I'm Deaf and probably don't know Italian Sign Language. Well... 1/N #deaf #interpreters #asl #access #physics
In most cases, I can just request ASL interpreters (yes, American Sign Language interpreters) months in advance. Who pays for it? Good question. That's something I've fortunately been mostly kept out of the loop on, rather than the discussions that happen at the conference! 2/N
But so we get terps set up months in advance, great. They're ASL, because I've barely had the chance to pick up any other language and it's my secondary mode of communication. ASL terps are hard to find in non-English speaking countries... UK too! UK uses BSL primarily. 3/N

@misskeelahrose @readingquietly @threadreaderapp This is nothing short of atrocious. I just did a search to see what lead up to Keelah's bigoted attack on this person.

twitter.com/search?f=tweet…

There was no interaction between them until 14 hours ago.
@misskeelahrose @readingquietly @threadreaderapp Let's archive this

web.archive.org/web/2019081718…

and then do a slightly more advanced search. Did @readingquietly ever write anything about Keelah?
@misskeelahrose @readingquietly @threadreaderapp A search says no.

No mention of her by said user. This looks like an unprovoked attack. An unprovoked bigoted attack.

This is blatant. #AbledsAreWeird

Let’s talk bodies, self, and the ethical use of biotechnology. A thread on what a human is, the differences between individuals, and autonomy as the bedrock principle of the biotechnological age. 1/x
Here’s the previous discussion on science, legitimacy, and social capital if you missed it

One time, I was invited to give a talk at a university about sign language studies. I gave the talk in ASL with the interpreters. After 45 minutes, my first question was "how did you get here?" It implied I couldn't get to the university without help. #AbledsAreWeird
When I was a first year student, my head resident advisor called me to dinner. During our conversation, he told me that he didn't occur to him that deaf people could go to school, work, drive, talk, have children, and etc. Hmm "Deaf" and "dead" spell differently. #AbledsAreWeird
At airport after I've landed, an attendant waits for me with a wheelchair. I as a deaf person need communication access. To them, the default accommodation is a wheelchair. I am not sure how it helps with communication but I ?appreciate? the effort. #AbledsAreWeird

Diagnosed with PTSD and severe depression in my mid-20s. Extensive medical treatment. A very long journey. In no particular order, common offerings from well-meaning people:

-- Have you tried thinking positively?
-- Everyone is sad sometimes.
-- Exercise!

The lack of knowledge about mental health disabilities is especially frustrating because you can tell so many people really do want to be helpful as long as it means not putting any more effort into said help beyond describing things that help them relax. Incredibly frustrating.
And it's not that things like yoga, exercise, a good diet, sleep hygiene, etc. can't be helpful to negotiate symptoms. It's when these things are presented to us 1) as though it's the first time we're hearing them and 2) as substitutes for therapy and meds that it's frustrating.
