I am honoured to join my sisters and comrades in @egnalegna in their call to #AbolishKafala. Egna Legna is a collective of Ethiopian domestic workers based in #Lebanon who advocate for the rights and dignity of other domestic workers. I send them my love and solidarity.
The Kafala system entraps migrant workers in Lebanon and the Gulf in contracts that bind them to their employers and creates conditions of enslavement which leave them susceptible to violence and abuse. #AbolishKafala
There are at least 250,000 migrant workers, mostly women from Africa and Asia, who work in Lebanon as housekeepers, carers or nannies. The economic crisis, #COVID19 pandemic, and the Beirut Port explosion have all compounded the already hellish conditions for them.

We bought air ticket for this sister July 14th Beirut to Addis Ababa. At airport, she was arrested because her madame called police &said she run away. But truth is madame threw her outside the Ethiopian consulate after contract finished. Instead of going home she went to prison!
Before July14 I contacted her madame to see if there were problems. The madame said no problems, she called police to remove complaint & the girl could travel. We were happy. So we booked the ticket online. Her family live in Ethiopia Kembata zone countryside they were happy too.
Flight was 3am, Egna Legna staff went with her to Beirut airport. But before flight she was taken away to jail. She commit no crime. We were angry. I called the madame but she didn’t care. After two weeks General Security had mercy and cleared her to go. After 2 weeks in jail!

Today is World Domestic Workers Day - June 16, and it is more important than ever to address a racist blight on Lebanese society: the Kafala system.

#EndTheirLockdown #AbolishKafala
It is our responsibility to spread awareness on the issue and make most Lebanese rethink what they consider normal, especially that they’ve experienced now being isolated at home.
#EndTheirLockdown is a campaign launched by @ARM_Leb to call on the Lebanese to see this parallel
and make a commitment to these women, in order to ensure the amélioration of their lives and abolishing the kafala system.
