Happy July 4th

Let’s talk about those who still aren’t free, as a result of racism in policing, prosecution, and sentencing — also known as @thenewjimcrow

Cops kill 3 people a day

Black people are 300+% more likely to be the victim

But it’s a lot more insidious than that.

🧵
1 out of every 3 Black boys and 1 out of every 6 Latino boys born today can expect to be sentenced to prison

A Black person is 500% more likely to be stopped without just cause than a white person

Black people are incarcerated at more than 5 times the rate of whites
32% of the US population is Black or Latino, but 56% of the US incarcerated population is Black or Latino

In fact, if Black and Latino people were merely incarcerated at the same rates as whites, prison and jail populations would decline by almost 40%

The #1 way cops are equipped to repress protest movements and perform no-knock raids on private homes is the BILLIONS of $ in military weaponry from the federal govt.

This is the militarization of the police, and it’s made an already violent institution even more dangerous.

🧵
The origins of the 1033 program lie in the “forever wars” on drugs, crime, and terror.

In 1989, Congress gave the Pentagon temporary authority to give military equipment to local law enforcement.

Anything was OK as long as it was deemed suitable “in counter-drug activities.”
In 1996, Congress made the Pentagon’s temporary authority to give weapons of war to local law enforcement agencies permanent and expanded its purview to “counterterrorism”, creating 1033 as we know it.

Since, 10,000 jurisdictions have received $7 billion-plus in equipment.

Want answers on what it means to #AbolishThePolice and #AbolishPrisons?

I interviewed @equalityAlec of @CivRightsCorps, and I don't say this often but this is a *must watch*

I interviewed @equalityAlec about his work ending the criminalization of poverty, the history of policing and prisons, the real motives behind reforms like body cams, arguments against #DefundThePolice, what abolition really means, and...

What you can do in your own community:
"No society in recorded history of the modern world ever attempted to take so many human beings from the schools, and families, and jobs, and medical care, and children, and put them into government run cages" - @equalityAlec

Derek Chauvin was involved in 5 police killings before suffocating George Floyd to death

But Chauvin's far from the only cop to get away with murder.

In fact, those who *are* fired just get hired somewhere else.

It's endemic.

Why #DefundThePolice then #AbolishThePolice?

Even those who still believe the fallacy that police and prisons make us safer understand that police accountability is critical — and "wandering cops" are a major concern

A 2020 Yale Law study found 1,100 terminated cops re-hired and walking the streets in Florida alone Image
The national decertification database isn't public, isn't checked by most depts before hiring, and doesn't include some of the biggest states, including California and New Jersey

This sorry excuse for transparency has led to numerous deaths

St. Ann, Missouri, is a prime example

This thread—which reaches its riotously discrediting climax by describing Bernie-supporting, Vox-podcasting @mattyglesias as a "fancy Rush Limbaugh"—is one of the dumbest things you'll ever read on this site.
Basically what's happening is that you have a Twitter subculture incapable of interpreting disagreement with progressive identitarian conceptions of race as anything other than red-pilled reactionary Limbaughism.
This group has lost the capacity to intelligently discriminate among the various forms of dissent they come across online. You've reached galactic levels of absurdity when your grand theory is that Matt Yglesias is Rush Limbaugh with a smile.

1. There's nothing revolutionary about incarcerating children
2. Why use the image of a Black boy to advertise prisons for children?
3. The colonial co-option of Youth Justice & Revolution is disrespectful
4. Paying prisoners in branded ‘Oasis Dollars’?! #secureschoolsareprisons
Youth Justice should mean abolishing the conditions that lead to imprisonment, such as isolation booths, exclusion, racism, ableism & poverty, not fast-tracking the school to prison pipeline.

We want this pipeline to be abolished, not extended. #endtheschooltoprisonpipeline
Children shouldn't be imprisoned. They need access to education that is fit for purpose & centres on their needs & experiences, not on a white, dominant, capitalist culture that sees our children as a commodity. We cannot let this happen. Humanise our children #antiracisted

Abolition is not about anarchy, or absence of accountability

As Ruth Wilson Gilmore said, it’s about the presence of life-affirming institutions

We decrim victimless “crimes”

And hold perpetrators of true crimes truly accountable to the people and conmunities they’ve harmed
Through reparative, transformative justice, victims and perpetrators (who’ve typically been victims themselves) are repaired and transformed through mediation, rehabilitation, and service to the community
Police patrols are replaced by wellness checks

And responses to emergencies are handled by highly trained, unarmed health and psychiatric experts

The sheer bravery of detained immigrants & employees at #Irwin led to a groundbreaking complaint to the @DHSOIG on Sept. 14, 2020, putting more focus on the horrific ongoing abuse of detained immigrants & staff at #Irwin.
Since the filing of our complaint, dozens of immigrant women have stepped forward describing the
gynecological abuse they too have faced at the hands of @ICEgov and @LaSalleCorr while detained at
#Irwin.

Read it here: bit.ly/IDCcomplaint
As we fight to #AbolishICE & #AbolishPrisons, we continue the call for the immediate release of ALL detained folks at #Irwin & elsewhere, accountability from ICE, LaSalle Corrections, & reparations to folks impacted by the physical & emotional trauma of detention & incarceration.

In Portland:

Cops beat #BlackLivesMatter protesters

Protect Proud Boys

And wait hours or *days* to respond to 911 calls

And people still claim cops “serve and protect”?

Prison Abolition may seem like a radical idea to some people but it is quite an easy and simple concept to grasp!
It is more than closing down prisons, it is dismantling the systems that create oppression, violence and inequality (to name a few)!
To decolonize something in Australia means the undoing of colonialism & all that it represents. It means unlearning the settler colonial behaviours, language, attitudes, racism, discrimination, violence and so on.
All of the above relate to Prison Abolition and until we dismantle the structures that create & enforce those representations from colonialism will we truly never understand what it is like to engage in meaningful equality for everyone in society.

For #ScholarStrike, a short starter list to get you going on #decolonizing your syllabus for the US history classroom (please add!) #twitterstorians
Think about what periodization really means. Are you upholding notions of American exceptionalism by making that whole unit about the American Revolution or the Civil War? Do linear concepts of time uphold European epistemologies that devalue non-European people & cultures?
Why "Early America"? How "early" are you really getting? How much time do you spend on the 30000+ years of history on this continent before you get to the little blip called European colonization?

☎️TKARONTO ALTERNATIVES TO CALLING 911☎️
Save these numbers in your phone!
In our carceral society there are no clear alternatives to calling 911. Even for fire or EMS, there is always a risk of police responding.
(1/7)
We hope to help folks understand their options for social services and crisis support in Toronto, beyond the police. We must continue to build community alternatives for policing and push to #abolitionthepolice and #abolishprisons.

We want to acknowledge the harmful legacy of social services & social work in "Canada" and the ways that these systems continue to cause harm. We’ve linked some articles about this harmful legacy in our Instagram highlights, along with other resources like The Access Point.

It's Juneteenth but I just found out my brother was denied release today. Black man, six years for a non-violent crime, and EVERY variable must be weighed except the one about them putting him in jail with adults when he was 16. Who pays for that. #AbolishPrisons
I'm trying to imagine the emotional and psychological torture of being denied on the day you thought you were being released, of applying 30 days later, knowing a yes can still become a no. Who can survive this, and if they do, to become what. #AbolishPrisons
This isn't his first stint. He's in his 30s now. And it took an embarrassingly long time for me to realize who started this cycle. Then one day I say his 1st mug shot and I fucking broke. He was a baby. And folk make millions off weed now. But where's my brother. #AbolishPrisons

Welcome new followers! #SurvivedandPunished is a prison abolition organization. We believe that prisons, detention centers, all forms of law enforcement, and punitive prosecution are rooted in systems of violence, including racial, anti-trans/queer, sexual & domestic violence. 1/
Our work focuses on criminalized survivors and the integrated relationship between systems of punishment + the pervasiveness of gender violence. We aim to #FreeAllSurvivors via mass defense projects, which would require the abolition of prisons and other systems of punishment. 2/

BLM organizers have long noted that while masses turn up in the wake of police murders of Black men, it's a struggle to get a small crowd to turn up for Black women. It's hard to get any attention at all when Black TGNC people are killed. #TonyMcDade #BlackTransLivesMatter
It's more complicated than mere homophobia and mysognoir in Black communities--though that's part of it. Yet it's also about entrenched discourses about who police target and kill that leaves out survivors, women, TGNC people, and many others. #TonyMcDade #BlackTransLivesMatter

Thread: The closest grocery store to my house is an Eastern European market. On my most recent trip there, everyone working the registers was Black, the first time I've ever seen this.

They were all there picking up the temporary positions that #COVID19 has made necessary.
Some of the workers had lost side jobs recently due to the economic downturn, others were searching before the #COVID19 crisis.
A brother told me the positions are part time, don’t come with healthcare, and are not guaranteed after the #COVID19 crisis. Many of the Black people in my life--particularly youth--who were previously out of work are currently taking up or applying for these jobs.

We need to be watching this and decrying it at every turn.

This is the vision of the world abolitionists have warned us about: slashing supports that grow and heal our communities, replacing them with policing and prisons.

#AbolitionNow #AbolishPrisons

msn.com/en-us/money/ma…
This is expensive for our families and neighborhoods, but beneficial for the elites who are hoarding resources in such a way that leads to problems like houselessness.

#AbolitionNow #AbolishPrisons
And the initial attack on the poor--like the initial attack on the Muslim, the undocumented, and so on--will always result in the heightened policing, incarceration, and militarization of all our communities if we don't nip it in the bud.

Wow, that last #thread really took off. Let’s try another. I want to think with folks about how we can talk about #SurvivingRKelly outside the logic of the prison industrial complex.
Many of the people who responded to my last thread engaged in carceral logics saying some variation on “his ass should rot in jail” if not calls for his death. Are there other ways we can imagine justice, accountability and healing?
Prison abolitionist Mariame Kaba has said, as ppl raised w/ carceral logics it’s hard for us to imagine or desire alternatives. The #prisonindustrialcomplex has limited how we think about justice—even though other nations do things differently.
