Yesterday, Tangaraju rushed to file a review application based on a new legal argument pertaining to why he believes his conviction and sentence should be set aside.
Yesterday, Tangaraju rushed to file a review application based on a new legal argument pertaining to why he believes his conviction and sentence should be set aside.
2/ It was an argument that he had not advanced before. It was summarily dismissed this afternoon without being heard by the court. This means there are no more avenues to halt his execution from taking place tomorrow at dawn unless President Halimah Yacob stops it.
3/ Tangaraju's mother, Paapa, visited him this morning for the first time in almost 3 years. She doesn't know that her son faces the noose tomorrow morning. The family haven't told her because they don't think she will be able to bear it.

We can't just have the death penalty for one person. Even if you believe Dylann Roof deserves to die, by supporting his death sentence, you're supporting the continuation of racial disparities, arbitrariness, murder of innocent people, & extraordinary fiscal & human cost.
I'm sorry if this tweet upsets you. I am. But how on earth could you interpret this as me not caring about or minimizing the brutal and tragic and unimaginable racist violence and murder and trauma and pain of communities and families because of the actions of Dylann Roof?
There are never just "special exemptions." Nature of sentencing laws. Always rule not exception. If the death penalty exists it'll be imposed and carried out predominately and disproportionately against poor, Black and Brown people, only in certain states.

The stay of execution by the US Supreme Court was only administrative and has already been lifted. Clemency by Governor Ivey has been denied, despite a letter from the sister of one of the officers begging her to reconsider. It's moving forward as of now.
