The debate has been raging about the #PSL promotion and relegation playoffs and I must admit that I too have been in the “scrap it” camp. The arguments for and against were compelling so I decided to take a deeper look.

As usual, I referred to the official PSL reading material as a start, in this instance, The NSL Handbook.
The play-off rules are quite simple. The PSL team in 15th plays against 2nd and 3rd in the NFD in a mini tournament and the team which finishes top gets promoted.

In the most recent playoff, @BlackLeopardsFC easily won three matches in a row and have a goal difference of +5 ahead of their last match against TTM today.

In the first game back, Mpusana Tani of Bloem Celtic pulled his hamstring and had to go off. Both Celtic and Baroka had not reported any injuries or absentees prior to the resumption of football.
Onto Mamelodi Sundowns who saw SIX players injured or nursing strains when they returned to training. Ngcongca, Ngoma, Mabunda, Makgalwa, Lebusa and Seabi experienced some form of strain or injury.

As a start, I looked at how many South Africans have coached the big three #PSL teams. What I found was worrying.
I began by looking into #KaizerChiefs and it shocked me that Chiefs has only had ONE South African head coach since 1994 (@komphelasteve 2015-2018) 😳😰

In fact, @ErnstMiddendorp, the current Chiefs coach, first appeared on the local scene in 2005 to coach Kaizer Chiefs and has coached SIX different #PSL clubs thus far.
This is his second stint at Chiefs along with spells at Martitzburg, Chippa, Bloem Celtic, FS Stars & Arrows

It's a known fact that crowd attendance has been an issue for a long time. Others have mentioned price while travel time and safety are also major factors for a lot of fans. I will look at pure attendance numbers as well as jump into some research I found around #PSL attendance
To make things easier, I focused on the top 10 crowd attendance averages for the last 3 years. I then looked at the big three teams (Chiefs, Pirates and Downs) and tracked their average attendance record over the last ten years.

I dont usually do speculation but let us speculate a bit on who could possibly come in as sponsor of the #PSL since the #AbsaPrem dela is done.
First the rumors. Its said that Multichoice will come in and take up that space. But they already pay the #PSL R600 million a year to broadcast PSL games. Why would they then come in and pay an additional R100 million just to put their name on it?
Some may say it strengthens their hand but i dont see how. They're also already involved through the MDC. As it is, they have great exposure and have all the content anyway. So why spend the additional money? I would love to see someone make a valid case for the expenditure.
The PSL losing Absa as a sponspr is a big deal. This has apparently been in the works for quite a while but here is a breakdown of how the Absa deal worked and how the money was used.

Absa and the PSL signed an initial R500-million sponsorship deal in 2007. The deal was renewed again in August 2017 with the agreement being that Absa would pay the PSL R100 million a year for naming rights to the league.
The sponsorship is mainly used for club incentives like monthly grants to PSL teams amounting R2.5-million a month. The league winners and runners up also get their allocations of R15-million and R7.5-million respectively from the Absa sponsorship

SAFA haven't released financials since 2017-18 and according to this report (sabc.co.za/sabc/annual-re…) are due to post a loss of around R74m for 2019. According to their 2018 results, current liabilities were R175m and current assets were R61m, pointing to serious liquidity issues
So I've been looking into the financials of both the #AbsaPrem and @SAFA_net and it's basically impossible for the PSL to survive without finishing the league while SAFA needs a bailout of some kind to have any chance of survival
