2/ I hated writing in grad school.

Going from reading papers to replicating one on my own was a daunting leap I didn’t know how to take…

So I mostly procrastinated and made excuses.

As an academic writing coach, here are the 7 most common mistakes I see researchers make when writing the Introduction section of their paper.

A thread. 🧵

#AcademicChatter #AcWri #newPI
#1: Not describing the problem that your study is solving

🌪️ The purpose of your Introduction section is to motivate the need for your study. Introducing tension is a great way of doing that!
#2: The Introduction section is too long

📏 Only mention research that gives context to the problem you are solving. The Introduction section isn't a literature review!

Hey, if you're trying to figure out how to keep up with THE LITERATURE in your field in a way other than doomscrolling twitter, I have a great tech tip for you! #AcWri #AcademicTwitter

🧵A thread:
1/10
You can follow journals in your field in a few different ways:

-social media
- email notifications
- RSS!!!

We're going to talk about RSS, which stands for Real Simple Syndication.
2/10
RSS is old technology, but it still works really well with sites that publish continuous updates. News sites, for example, often have RSS feeds because they're always publishing new articles. So are academic journal article publishers.

Do you feel confused over how to write a #LiteratureReview, clueless about why we write this or where to start? A lot of us started there!

Here's my idea to
Write a #LitRev in 5 definitive steps🧵

#LiteratureReview #AcWri #PhDtips #AcademicTwitter #ScienceTwitter #PhDlife
1️⃣ Start by identifying the 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹. These questions will guide your literature collection and writing of the review:
— Why this problem?
— What has been done before and where's the research gap?
— What other methods exist, and why could the chosen method fill the gap? 1. Identify the goal of the review Why am I solving this par
2️⃣𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 relevant literature to answer the above questions by starting from a root paper, branch out and then narrowing down to your theme.
I'd suggest @rsrchrabbit for this step. (I've already made a reel about this and you can find it in my recent story/highlights.) 2. Collect relevant articles to answer the above 4 questions

He decides to do an experiment

He divides the class in two groups: quantity and quality
The quantity group are graded on how many photos they take.
For an A, they need to take the most photos.

The quality group are graded on the calibre of their photos. For an A, they only need one photo but it has to be excellent

Writing apps for PhD! - a 🧵

Looking for the perfect #notetaking system? Or writing #workflow?

After trying to integrate all my writing into one app, I couldn't choose one.
As researchers our writing needs are diverse & so here's my #writing system for anyone who needs! Image

So.... I finally made the switch to @zotero as my #ReferenceManager and am absolutely in love with it! ♥️

The Zotfile and Notero plugins are a godsend - delighted with how they make my #workflow seamless.

Here's why: a 🧵

#literaturereview #litRev #acwri
Zotfile lets you
- sync Zotero library across devices through any cloud storage you use.
- Extract annotations from pdfs annotated with other software!
- rename all the pdfs in any format you prefer, save & sync them with your cloud.

This article helped:
guides.lib.berkeley.edu/c.php?g=4472&p…
Notero syncs Notion + Zotero!

Whenever you add a new paper to synced Zotero collection, a new file is created in a linked Notion database.
Any note you create for that paper will be automatically sent to that file!

So easy to organize & keep track of notes.

If you've been struggling (and really, who hasn't?) to get your article written and submitted, this workshop can help! How? I create structure, accountability, and community to keep you moving forward.
I also help you learn all of the unspoken rules and weird secret handshakes of academic article publishing (and boy howdy, are there ever a lot). The idea is to increase your chances of getting an R and R decision rather than a desk reject or the looooong rejection.

And then spend the entire time getting lost in searching/ wallowing in tangential directions?

Here is a🧵on Quick #LitRev technique...

From my fair share of struggle with literature reviews, I devised a technique that helped me do *quick* literature surveys, especially when I needed to
- write a #grant #proposal
- improve a half-written #manuscript
- learn a new method/theory

So, here you go...

THREAD: On reading, note-taking, synthesizing and writing.

It's the beginning of a new semester and year, and folks are looking for multiple sources to help their students with reading strategies, note-taking techniques, synthesizing-and-literature-reviewing, and writing.
I was in a meeting today discussing a potential professional development workshop for graduate students, where I indicated my approach to teaching academic writing (and everything else re: #AcWri) hinges on 3 building blocks:

1) How to read
2) How to synthesize
3) How to write
You may notice that I have shrunk my Reading-Annotating-Synthesizing-Writing (RASW) structure to a RSW framework. It's not really compressed, but I summarized Reading-and-Annotating as solely Reading. In my view, reading needs to be active, requires coordination and NOTE-TAKING.

How I think about the academic writing process.

An #AcWri thread in gifs with parenting refs - b/c writing is a lot like watching your child grow up.
First comes the baby draft. Anyone who’s had a child in their life knows that along with the joys of a new baby, there’s a whole lot of crap too. It’s no different for writing. Consider this your shitty draft. ALL writing starts here.
Next comes your toddler draft. Nothing makes sense and initial excitement about writing this piece has more or less disappeared. You’re wondering why you did this to yourself and when this will ever end...

Next side quest---"Get Structure"---is open for my history writing seminar, and I'm going to post a twitter-friendly version of it here:

#acwri #twitterstorians
Writing something the length of a dissertation/book chapter is not a natural thing to do! It takes effort, and to be sustainable, it takes effort distributed over time.
Even the most insightful thinker does not think in polished essays; they think in chunks, in furtive observations, in half-realized concepts, and then they fashion all of those things into a polished essay by spending the time to develop them.

#AcWri Thread:

My students ALWAYS ask me the question:

"How do I go from having the Detailed Outline to actually writing a Memorandum (or a series of Memos) that I can then assemble into the full draft of the paper?"

Well, everyone: Grab a chair because HERE IT GOES.
As you all know I’m finishing a chapter on ethnography in comparative environmental politics.

Comparative is what I do and who I am.

This doesn’t mean that it’s any easier to write. So I always go back to basics.

1) Initial Outline. Basic layout of ideas, headings/thoughts.
2) Break down each chapter heading/main idea into ideas/Topic Sentences/Triggering Questions.

As you can see here, I grabbed the “ethnography in CEP” and started writing Triggering Questions that help trigger my thinking.

I start adding more detail to the heading outline.

First of all, you may have noticed I did not have a "Reading Notes" blog post of @biblioracle 's excellent book, "The Writer's Practice", which I HAVE read, recommended numerous times AND tweeted about. I think I never got around writing that post, which I'll do now.
I have become a MUCH better writer by PRACTICING WRITING.

I write a metric ton of text.

I write a blog. I write journal articles, book chapters, and I'm writing three books (don't ask, I'm just... unable to say "no" to interesting opportunities).

I have explained before...
... that I firmly believe we can ALL develop A WRITING PRACTICE.

In order to learn how to develop a system to regularly produce text, you DO need guidance. The books I'm going to write about and the posts I'm going to link to will explain how to develop this writing practice.

Two weeks ago I asked my fellow #AcademicTwitter:

How to cope with doing a part time #PhD and full time work in times of #COVID19?

Here are the tips I have received: a thread

#phdpandemic @AcademicChatter @careerconversa1 1/
"1. Work on your motivation. Why do you want a #PhD? " @4nn4nd4

It may help to create a mindmap of your own reasons and have it always visible. In my case, I like to write lists so I put a post-it at my computer with my top 3 to keep the motivation up.

#Motivation #phdchat 2/
"2. Manage your energy, not your time." @elfriesen

In times of #phdpandemic our energy may be very low. So, it is important to make good use of it.

I gave a presentation on Creating Effective #Writing Habits today as part of the kickoff for our @SCMirecc @Ce_MHOR Scientific #WritersMonth. Suggestions are evidence-based & tested by myself & @EvaWoodwardPhD. Sharing highlights in thread below. #AcWri #AcademicTwitter 1/17 Image
First, "why me?" to share about writing habits? I used to think I was bad at writing & would never have many papers. In my first job, a prolific writer shared many of her writing practices. The red line shows when I changed my writing approach. Definite improvement! #acwri 2/17 Image
Here's the list of writing habits we discussed today - regular writing appointments, tracking, & accountability are my top 3 (although I use all of these!) #AcWri 3/17 Image
