Managing #academic transitions in a time of #COVID19, a long ass, compiled thread focused on preparation, not panic, particularly for #TeamRhetoric and #CommunicationSoWhite folks:
1. Repeat after me: ASYNCHRONOUS DIGITAL MINIMALISM, WITH VIDEO LECTURES OPTIONAL. @AimiHamraie, who is an expert in cultivating care, is right to push us to think more correspondence courses less classrooms. Social justice and digital infrastructures demand the former.
1a. There's no need to reinvent the wheel or rush going online any more than absolutely required. Here are great resources on online teaching and access from experts in the area to get you started: docs.google.com/document/d/1yB… and mapping-access.com/blog-1/2020/3/…

1. I want to share some thoughts about how I’ve been feeling lately, in part because I suspect that many of you are feeling the same way and, for me at least, there is comfort in solidarity. #COVID19 #academic #AcademicChatter #medicine #healthcare
2. This has been a tough week, and I’m afraid that it is only the beginning. We are on spring break and I had a long list of tasks I’ve needed to accomplish but it has been difficult with everything that has been going on.
3. It isn’t just the trip cancelations and the challenge of having to move two highly interactive seminars into some sort of online format. It is the growing recognition that we are in the midst of an outbreak...

I am so glad that researchers are interested in helping extend #STEM opportunities to #tribal students!

But please understand that we #Indigenous academics spend considerable time to cultivate relationships of TRUST. No one should expect automatic access our networks. 1/8 #phd
Some well-intentioned researchers have asked to contact my networks bc they 1) have a #diversity goal (Indigenous people as a ✔️), 2) request a letter of support, or 3) have an idea to "help us". If this is our first communication, understand that we have not yet built trust. 2/8
Know that many #Indigenous academics have been burned by ppl who take the letter of support without honoring their commitments to those who helped obtain the grant or tenureship benchmark. That's extractive, and we do not forget. (Also true for #research community engagement) 3/8

Do we really know #Science & #Physics as well as we think? People like Dr. John G. #Trump did things had only been done by Nikola Tesla previously. Was #Technology #suppressed since the 19th century?

Just who was Dr. John G. #Trump, uncle of @POTUS?
Read a profile of him from the #Journal - #Physics Today:

OK. It's happening, and I can finally talk openly about it (a thread).

I have decided to transfer from my #PhD into a #Masters degree. I'm currently writing my thesis - I'm due to submit in October.

And I want to talk about it, because we don't talk about this enough.
This isn't a decision I've made lightly, or impulsively. It's due to a plethora of factors, including personal, project and professional reasons. It's something I've been thinking about for a long time, and something I should have thought more about before I even started my PhD.
I like studying. I like learning. I loved university, honours was challenging, but a PhD was the next logical step. I took a little time off (not enough)-but getting a scholarship early pretty much confirmed I'm be moving on to the next part of my academic life.

Like announced, I'll start a thread on the symbolism of the (in)famous black & white banner in #Islam. This comprehensive thread will explore its historical origins and cover a list of its contemporary users from a neutral #academic point of view. Not for the faint of heart. 😄
As a political leader & head of a growing religious community, the #prophet Muḥammad used to fly a banner (liwāʾ) and a flag (rāya). The difference? According to the #dictionary, a banner is "a long piece of cloth" while a flag is "a piece of cloth that represents a group."
The Companion Ibn al-ʿArabī was quoted in Fatḥ al-Bārī (6/147) as saying: "A banner is what is tied to the side of a spear to rally around, while a flag is that which is planted and left to be waved by the wind."

[Do #Science #Panels work?]

One of my least favorite formats of communicating research w/in #Academia & yet it's everywhere & continues to be the default to pack as many big names as possible onto a stage.

Have you seen it go well? And seriously, why do we keep doing it?
One of the biggest culprits of when #Science #SciComm #Academic panels not working tends to be poor moderation.

My intro to dialogue facilitation/panel moderation came from a journalism prof who emphasized the importance of doing your homework on the panelists & the audience.
As a #science #academic panel moderator, you:

- keep the flow of conversation going
- balance voices & time, being mindful of power imbalances
- be a proxy for your audience

It really doesn't go well when moderators just take over the conversation instead of FACILITATING it.

[Day2: Failing Better Together]
Q: What does "failure" mean to you?

For me, my #sciencefails & #SciComm fails fuel my teaching & community-building values:
- Creating spaces to fail better
- Building communities to exchange learnings
- Scaffolded experiences to reframe failure KyleMarian on a microphone with her back to the camera. She's facing the audience and hosting a storytelling show.
#Failure is an important part of #Science & #Comedy, but it wasn't until I got into comedy where I started understanding the impact of being transparent & celebrating failures.

It also got me thinking: does #Academia have an integrated process & outlet for dealing w/ failure?
Do you incorporate #journaling or #reflections into your #SciComm practice?
If you work in teams, do you have regularly-scheduled de-briefs?
As professionals, are you given allotted times in your paid schedule to reflect on project learnings?

Then more recently she asked #Academic Twitter with updates wherein I heard that some of us are entering citations manually. This blew my mind. So I took the challenge posed by @VirenKaul and will do my 1st #Tweetorial on reference managers.
First…a poll. How do you manage/enter your references?

As the new #academic year beckons, I'm preparing new lectures and materials, including on the EU single market. The irony that I, as a British citizen, may not be allowed to work in the EU without a visa post-March isn't lost on me.

#PeoplesVote #StopBrexit #edchat #educhat
Given that the UK will be days away from leaving the @DSMeu when I deliver one of the lectures... on the #digital #singlemarket it's going to call for some agile teaching because I have no doubt the UK government will still be making it up as they go along as they have thus far.
However, whatever the stress caused by this, my thoughts will be with fellow British lecturers, academics & researchers in the EU27 and EU27 lecturers, academics & researchers in the UK who do not know their future.
