Our students come to us with deep, damaging beliefs about intelligence & IQ.

I *really* wanted to teach students about intelligence last fall, but I found myself unprepared. After DAYS learning, I was angry & tired & I dumped everything into the best lesson I could manage then. Image
These materials are woefully short of perfect. I think that executed wrong, they could be damaging, so I've put off sharing them.

But as educators, we need to ask ourselves:

Are we empowering students to fight scientific racism wherever they see it, including their own minds? Image
I looked at many cog textbooks. They skirted the hard questions completely.

People I love & respect recommended Ritchie's short book. Here is the page on Galton, a full-blown OG scientific racist who COINED THE TERM EUGENICS, which is positively FAWNING ("a true genius"). šŸ˜” ImageImage

I have seen so many white academics posting their rage, solidarity, demonstrating their allyship by directing other to books, creators, thinkers who speak to anti racism and anti blackness in prticular. Yay! BUT
As a black academic, Iā€™m slightly dubious because I wonder is this performative. How many of their black colleagues experience this solidarity and allyship? How many interventions have they made i their departments on their campuses for black lives?
#AcademicTwitter Black Lives Matter is about changing institutions. So organize, strategize, actualize what you theorize. Because this work is about saving lives. You value the work of black academics, scholars and activist by valuing their lives everyday, is all your work.
