How to test calf strength (plantarflexors) and it's relevance to Achilles tendons and sport.
A thread🧵 Image
I was interested in plantarflexor function and the link to tendinopathy, this interest shaped by PhD.

We know that the strength deficits exist prior to the onset of tendinopathy pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16260469/
@mahieu_nele
But we didn’t know which muscle was affected or why?
A large problem was actually testing plantarflexor strength! Many studies used bespoke devices or variations of protocols using isokinetic dynamometry (IKD) with little justification for speeds, positions etc.

Making it difficult to compare studies

@saurabhraajjain

Good day Saurabh.
Would you kindly confirm this?
Much appreciated.

I just heard a tinnitus while communicating telepathically with SRJ and heard a highpitched tinnitus in my left wear and felt a resultant slight loss of hearing and dullness plus weakness and debility.

I had just left a comment and given the link to my Instagram page about
20 minutes.

I am writing this as I am about to leave my apartment.

I just finished re-reading the #Iliad

Or rather, I read @stephenfry’s highly enjoyable version “Troy”

Here are a couple of points with some relevance to today’s war in #Ukraine

A short 🧵(with some classical art)

/1 Image
Who is to blame for the war, and at what point did it become inevitable?

Was it the Trojan abduction of Helen, the judgement of Paris, the lottery Odysseus organised, Paris’ and Antimachus' undermining of the Greek ultimatum?...

/2 Image
Or was it the challenge Troy presented to Agamemnon’s hegemony as “king of men”....
... or the Greek pursuit of Troy’s spoils?

In the case of Russia vs Ukraine, we also see multiple reasons being debated, some more realistic than others.

(Did someone say 'Mearsheimer'?)

Being a slow news day as far as info from the critical fronts, want to discuss an event from some days back. #Ukrainian sources released this drone video, claiming it shows a #Russian helicopter being destroyed on #SnakeIsland. Have wanted to discuss since I became aware of it on
May 8. For ~1 week, UA forces targeted #SnakeIsland (or nicer, Serpent Island, of ancient #Achilles lore) with a puzzling amount of air assets. As I reported then, it seemed evident that #Ukraine aimed to recapture the island as a PR coup. The island is also strategic as an AA
asset, has legal territorial ramifications, and is potentially important long term for commercial traffic control of the black sea including #Ukraine's vital exports of grains & wheat. The #Russian MoD later claimed there was such an assault & that significant air & other assets

Happy to share @pennmotionlab latest paper + 1st collab with @kgSilbernagel and @UDtendongroup. We calculated #achilles tendon #biomechanics over a range of #rehabilitation exercises to rank progressive loading...

journals.lww.com/acsm-msse/Full…
We calculates 3 aspects of loading biomechanics 1) peak load, 2) impulse, and 3) loading rate. We think peak load is most important in healing tendon so we gave that the strongest scaling factor, then impulse, then rate... Image
But you might think Achilles loading parameters should be weighted differently. So we made an app for that... a macro in excel actually. So you can calculate the loading rankings based on your own intuition...

THREAD:
Thought to share how I fixed my Achilles which started 6 months ago.
I'm 46, run 2–3 times a week.
This worked for me but everyone is different.
Always consult professional, but this might save you time/money/pain & ur sanity😊
#achilles @UKRunChat @247running @runr_uk
1 – Always listen to your body. 🦶

We all know if something is not quite right.

Don’t ignore it, act immediately, be proactive.
2 – Resting won’t make Achilles just go away! 🛌

It will for a few days but it wont just go away without you taking action.

If anything resting long term will make it worse as muscles & tendon weakens around Achilles and it will flare up once you start running again.
