AZ just passed a bill banning abortions for fetal indications, and confers embryos and fetuses civil rights as long as they are inside a uterus (but not if they are created/destroyed in a lab setting, eg during in vitro fertilization). 2/

OK just passed 3 anti-abortion laws, including a ban after fetal cardiac activity is detected, revoking medical licenses for physicians who perform abortions, and that only OBGYNs may perform abortions. 3/

We recently received a long-awaited decision from #SCOTUS in our case challenging Louisiana's abortion clinic shutdown law.

"This is a big win that vindicates what we’ve said all along, which is that the Louisiana admitting privileges law is unconstitutional. This is a victory for the people of Louisiana and the rule of law, but this case never should have gotten this far.
We won an identical case four years ago in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, and the fact that we had to fight so hard again goes to show that nothing should be taken for granted when it comes to protecting abortion rights.
Today was an historic day. We heard from real people who know what it’s like to provide abortion care, to struggle to obtain abortion care, and to fight to protect the constitutional right to abortion. They showed us why we need to #ActForWomen. Now, it's up to Congress to act.
Our President and CEO, Nancy Northup, testified alongside Dr. Yashica Robinson, an OBGYN who works at one of the last abortion clinics in Alabama and Holly Alvarado, a member of the U.S. military who had to contend with a web of burdensome restrictions to access abortion care.
Holly had to drive hundreds of miles across state lines and empty her bank account in order to obtain abortion care and was then deployed to Afghanistan just a week later with almost nothing to her name. #ActForWomen

Holly points first to the 24-hour waiting period, which forced her to make two separate appointments. She says that, as a law enforcement officer, these restrictions made her feel unsafe and that they are dangerous for women. #ActForWomen
She then talks about the mandatory counseling and mandatory ultrasound, both of which she said were not patient-centered care and had no purpose. She had already made her decision and these requirements were meant to change her mind. #ActForWomen
Dr. Robinson says it is already difficult for her patients to make certain health care decisions and laws that require her to lie to them about abortion care makes the process exponentially more difficult and confusing for them. #ActForWomen
Dr. Robinson also says that people who walk into her clinic have already thought about their decision to get an abortion. There is no reason, medical or otherwise, to force pregnant patients to wait even longer to receive care. #ActForWomen

Starting now: Advocate Holly Alvarado testifies in support of the Women’s Health Protection Act. She experienced multiple barriers to access abortion care in North Dakota, which only has one abortion clinic. She was told to travel to Minnesota, 4 hours away for care. #ActForWomen
Holly had to spend 4 days in Minnesota to fulfill the state’s requirements before receiving abortion care.

Starting now at the Women’s Health Protection Act: the witnesses, including our President and CEO, Nancy Northup, are being introduced. The first witness is Dr. Yashica Robinson, an obstetrician and gynecologist.
Dr. Robinson, who works at an abortion clinic in Alabama, says it is not unusual for patients to travel up to 8 hours to reach the clinic for abortion care. She says that several clinics have been forced to shut down due to medically unnecessary restrictions. #ActForWomen
Dr. Robinson:

2. In 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court reaffirmed the right to access abortion care without undue burden. Yet anti-abortion lawmakers have escalated their attacks, pushing through over 170 harmful laws since then, and nearly 450 since 2011.
