I just wrapped up a call with admissions leaders and counselors where we asked them to take a look at two essays, one that was a part of a successful application to a top university and one that was written by ChatGPT . . .
. . . more than 50% of the participants--which included seasoned admissions leaders from prominent universities and college counselors with years of experience--thought the response written by ChatGPT was written by a student . . .
. . . I had thought that most would be able to still pick the one written by the student (evidently because I knew the authorship, I was able to convince myself that I could identify the "authentic voice") . . .

Maybe another word on the '#unredacted Fauci emails', now that it is clear that there were no cover-ups or suppression of #lableak, but just neutral #scientific discussion.

Observe how lableak advocates will run their #disinformation playbook, we've seen this before.

A ЁЯз╡

1/
Everytime new contradictory information (to the lableak conspiracy myth) comes out, there is an increase in #activity by lableak advocates.

We've seen this with the BANAL sequences in LAOS that proved that the RBD domain of SARS-CoV-2 was not 'manmade'
2/
We've seen this in response to 2 scientific papers that establish the Huanan market as the center & start of the pandemic.

(Worth re-reading this thread too)

The language of quant crit is in its infancy but the practice has a long legacy dating back to Du Bois and Wells-Barnett.

Let's use #QuantCritSyllabus to feature studies that use critical quantitative methodologies and frameworks. I'll start.

Ph.D admission decisions are kicking in & many students are going through rounds of interviews. Here are a few tips that IтАЩve learnt and shared over the years.

Disclaimer: These are based on personal experiences derived from a limited sample. Take it with a grain of salt ЁЯША.
(1/19) First of all, letтАЩs start off by acknowledging that PhD admission is extremely competitive. You're prolly fighting for an average of 5-30 spots out of hundreds/thousands of applicants. Attempting itself is a win. Kudos !ЁЯСПЁЯП┐
#admissions #Competition #phdpositions #gradschool
(2/19) Money is at the stake. What does this mean? Someone out there is willing to take a risk on you & guaranteeing that youтАЩll be taken care of for 5-6 years. Your tuition, fees, health insurance, & monthly living allowance are all paid for by the dept.

ЁЯз╡Three messages most parents of high school students need to hear but either never do -- or don't
listen to:
1- Talk to fewer parents of other hs students & more parents of current college students/recent grads about #collegeadmissions. They give nec. perspective/encouragement
2- When coaches, trainers, other adults say "your kid can play (insert sport) in college," it doesn't mean- a: they actually can b: they can play anywhere they want c: they'll get a scholarship d: if they do get $, it will be a full ride
3- College admission is not fair. It's a human process, and therefore inherently imperfect/fallible. It's driven by supply & demand, institutional priorities, and mission. Therefore, neither an admit nor deny is a value judgment or prediction of future success (on them or you).

ЁЯУв┬аImportant Update: For uniformity & comparability in #FYJC admissions and to ensure fair play for students across all boards, the state government will conduct a CET for all Std 10th students on an OPTIONAL basis around July-end or August first week #CET #SSC #admissions #fyjc
While the online link to apply for this entrance test & the list of exam centres will be available post the declaration of SSC board results around July 15, the details about the likely timing & the exam format are being shared to help aspirants prepare better for the test.
The CET (entirely optional) will be based on the Std.10th state board curriculum. It will be held offline in the MCQ format for 100 marks, & for a 2-hour duration. Equal weightage out of 100 marks will be for questions from the subjects of Eng, Maths, Science & Social Sciences.

Last minute ACT tips that will increase your score tomorrow

1. (If nothing else)-bubble in everything. I don't care if the proctor or your parent or friend says there is a penalty for guessing. They are wrong... Bubble in everything. Do not leave a bubble blank

Not like this
2. Waiting until the 5 minute warning to bubble in everything usually makes you feel stressed out. Bubble in everything 15 minutes before the end of each section (mark your spot) and use the 5 min warning to work on easy questions that take up no time
3. Set a watch to noon when you start a section- keeps tracks of the time without calculating- professor Heytens taught me this before my first law school exam

As a former admissions officer and #HigherEd researcher, the work we have been doing on the environmental context dashboard (ECD) has been very important to me. Of course, selective college admissions is flawed (#AdmissionsGate anyone?). (a thread #emchat #admissions)
The current system uses many data points, most of which are biased in some way (SAT, GPA, rec letters, essays all have flaws). Admissions officers know this & try to adjust their assessment of apps, given inequalities of opportunity & biased metrics, but this is not easy.
Holistic review at its best tries to contextualize students' performance & account for systemic disadvantage in the K12 education system. But some offices do a better job of contextualizing apps than others.
