3D maps can look complex & difficult to make…
Here are 12 humans who proved to me that 3D is not out of reach:
Different tools, many styles... all fantastic: 1/14🧵 #dataviz #3dmaps #gis
Graig Taylor | @CraigTaylorViz: Legendary 3D maps made in #Cinema4D. Not only gorgeous maps but also perfectly animated worlds. His maps cannot be unseen. Clearly a #3dmap guru. #GIS #dataviz 2/14
Tyler Morgan-Wall |@tylermorganwall devlpr of the incredible R libraries #rayshader and #rayrender adding features & tutorials for free at an incredible pace: a *true treasure* for the #rstats #3dmaps & #3dviz world. A must-follow for 3d #dataviz. 3/14 🧵

For anyone who might find it useful or interesting, I've cobbled together my tips on #aerialod into a new blog post - may be useful for teaching, experiments or just as a bit of distraction. I've shared sample data, screenshots of settings, and new images

you can also make your own Minecraft-style world, should you be into that kind of thing Image
and it also works surprisingly well with larger areas, once you fiddle with the settings - I didn't get very far with labelling this one though Image

Whilst working away on stuff I've also been rendering a few 3D landscape scenes in the background, as a distraction activity, so here's a little snapshot of Ben Nevis and the surrounding area Image
an here's a dusky Cairngorm plateau that I exported during my lunch break - I find these quite therapeutic, and also at present I quite like looking at unpopulated landscapes Image
posting another distraction landscape from the Highlands now before turning off twitter for a while (i.e. at least a few minutes) Image

"A few flow maps + data to play with" - this is just the latest installment in a long series but this time with link to the underlying England and Wales commute data, for any keen boffins

by adding the white border, when you add it in to #aerialod you get this kind of 'on a tray' effect, which is sort of weird but also quite interesting Image
with a bit more playing around this could probably be a reasonably good way of visualising these kinds of flows (or maybe not, we'll see) Image

A little Cairngorms flyover, just for fun, with music #aerialod #ffmpeg (I also put a locator map in the top right)
method: Aerialod to create the tiles, ffmpeg to stitch them together and add the little map overlay (made in QGIS), title in Kdenlive, data from @OrdnanceSurvey, and landscape by glaciation
@OrdnanceSurvey command to patch together the c. 1,400 frames exported from Aerialod: ffmpeg -r 40 -i #####_%03d.png -c:v libx264 -s 1920x1080 -r 40 -pix_fmt yuv420p output_file_name.mp4

Then a couple more commands to add the music and the overlay inset map - gradually getting to grips with it

Playing around with #aerialod by @ephtracy, new software that makes it fairly straightforward to create renderings of #lidar terrain data, cleared of forest. It's amazing....
@ephtracy The paper that we released last week describes a city up on a forested plateau near Angkor. Here you can see the sandstone valley up top that they tried to carve into a reservoir. There's features all around & a canal leading over the cliff sending water down to quarries below...
@ephtracy ... with a temple (that we knew of) perched on the promontory overlooking the plains below where Angkor is.
