I am excited to announce the launch of one of the projects I have been working on this year: @afcftadialogues

AfCFTA Dialogues is a platform designed to foster engagement and understanding of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

@AfCFTA @ICOYACA @AfCFTANG ImageImage
The platform will provide information on the AfCFTA implementation, fostering meaningful discussions for successful adoption. The goal is to raise awareness, encourage collaboration, and shape African trade's future through knowledge sharing and inclusive growth.
@afcftadialogues
The AfCFTA offers a unique chance to boost intra-African trade and elevate Africa's global trade position. Once fully implemented, it can uplift 30 million from extreme poverty, create jobs, boost reserves, foster industrial development, and spur economic growth.

1. On peace and security

EU reiterated €600m commitment to AU and Africa-led peace support operations for 2022-2024. But concerns over the sustainability of the EPF are there. 55% of its budget for 2021-2027 has already been pledged to Ukraine.

#AfCFTA #tradelaw #covidimpact
said the Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade in a statement. The Kenyan-made Exide batteries worth KES 9.24 million (USD 77,000) landed in Ghana last week, marking a formal start of preferential trading under the AfCFTA framework.
The consignment by Associated Battery Manufacturing EA Ltd is the clearest indication that Kenya can now access markets in West and Central Africa at preferential rates. [Business Daily article. Read more here bit.ly/3SoNR6q].

What is collaboration?
A working practice whereby individuals and organisations work together for a common purpose and to achieve mutual benefit.

Collaboration between business entities is as old as time. But the basics have remained;
1. Common purpose
2. Mutual benefit
A popular African proverb says:
"Walk alone, walk fast,
Walk together, walk far."

Our entrepreneurship journey isn't like a 'walk in the Park' and we can find strength, better productivity and sustainability walking with other like-minded individuals and/or organisations.

Last week @FarmMakeoverCo asked if I could talk about what impact the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement means for Zim farmers. Today I have a bit of time before church starts so let's see how much ground we can cover on that topic... What would be a good # for it...
#AfCFTAagric What is the African Continental Free Trade Agreement? It's a pact by continental leaders meant to make economic activity between & amongst African countries faster, simpler & cheaper. It has a number of components on tariffs, movement of people, infrastructure
#AfCFTAagric It's unfortunate that there hasn't been a single concise document breaking down what it is and how it sets out to actualise its vision, but we'll work on that. For now let's stick to what it will mean practically if you are in the Zim agric sector.

Congratulations to @POTUS. Joining my voice to other Africans at home and in the Diaspora who hope for a better, more substantive engagement. We're rooting for you and hope you can achieve your agenda - both for the American people and for the world. THREAD
In his prepared remarks for his committee hearing @ABlinken promised "engage the world not as it was, but as it is.” WE will hold you to that. US Africa policy should, in intent and practice, seek mutual prosperity between Africa and America. 1/
The world as it is recognizes that Africans have interests that are unique and separate from any Great Power competition. We want partners in fulfilling aspirations for ourselves & our children. Finding fulfillment in our homeland. That our culture, economy, societies can thrive.

China and African Debt - A short thread
Continuing a 30-year tradition, the Chinese Foreign Minister began his year with a trip to Africa. There is no better indication of the importance China attaches to its relationship with the continent. 1/
Which is why it is so disappointing that very little of note was achieved. Up to now, Africa has suffered more from the economic fallout of the pandemic. Debt servicing and a liquidity crunch has backed us against the wall and one would have expected this to be addressed. /2
China’s role in Africa’s current debt crisis is limited to a few countries – but those few countries have such an outsized role in their sub-regions that any default event there could end up having a domino effect elsewhere in Africa. 3/

#Africa #AfCFTA #Trade #Coronavirus

After months of delays caused by the global coronavirus pandemic, African countries formally started trading under a new continent-wide free trade zone on Friday.
The goal of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is to put together 1.3 billion people in an economic bloc of $3.4 trillion, the largest free trade area since the World Trade Organization was created.
It will increase trade between African neighbors and allow the continent to establish its own value chains. It is predicted by the World Bank that by 2035 it will bring tens of millions out of poverty.

Let me tell you a story about @OlumideAkpata, candidate for @NigBarAssoc president. In 2018, we had negotiated #AfCFTA & I was moving to Geneva to work with King & Spalding LLP to design Nigeria’s 1st trade remedies infrastructure to protect the economy. One evening, I got a call
Mr @OlumideAkpata , then chairman of the @nbasblofficial , had come into Abuja few days before I was to travel and wanted to speak with me. We met up. He told me, “Our conference this year is on the #AfCFTA & because you worked on it and know it, you should help with direction”
We sat in the Hotel lobby at 10pm and spoke for over 4 hours on conference topics, discussions areas, speakers, break-out sessions and the role of lawyers in the AfCFTA. For context, this was a partner in one of the most successful law firms in Nigeria and I was this young lawyer

Congratulations to everyone who just passed the Bar exams. After 5years (more or less) + 1 year of law school, you’re now a lawyer.

Here are some pointers on how to maximize your law career. This probably also applies also to any young lawyer.

A thread.
You are only as relevant as you can solve the problems of your clients. People just want their problems to go away, they don’t want to read a 30-page opinion on the legal meaning of “shall” and “may”. Build your career around solving real problems for people & businesses.
Don’t be in a hurry to specialize. Experiment with different areas of law. You never know what you will find interesting or be extremely good at till you try. This is one advantage of a big firm, it gives you the chance to try out a lot of things early.

Will #COVID19 derail the #AfCFTA's start of trading? A timely input, now circulating, from @AfroChampions: "We make recommendations to salvage and keep the AfCFTA on track".

A thread:
"A continent that was looking forward to opening its borders to a new trade revolution starting July 2020, now has almost all of its borders shut in order to fight the pandemic. What will happen to the #AfCFTA? Will COVID19 worsen countries preparedness, commitment to AfCFTA?"
"The highly anticipated July 2020 start of AfCFTA trading timeline is at risk in light of the above. COVID-19 firefighting means there is significantly reduced attention span for AfCFTA issues among governments, policymakers and the private sector."

In the light of the new #coronavirus cases in #Osun, let's very briefly talk about #Nigeria's (or Africa's borders). It was sometime last year that I found that probably the 4th largest concentration of Ogbomoso indigenes after Ogbomoso itself, Ibadan and Kano, is in Abidjan.
Basically, this Nigerian community has links with that part of #IvoryCoast because of trade routes that predate the British and the French, and apparently, those trade routes are still in use, which is how people made it through #Nigeria's ostensibly closed borders.
Internet service provider went down, so the thread will continue shortly.

I've seen replies that saying Ogbomoso people are also strong in #Jos and #Ghana, but for the purposes of this, I'll stick with what Mr Akin Akinbola, a much older man from Ogbomoso, told me in Paris.

The @ITCnews has posted a profound, strategic contribution to negotiations on the #AfCFTA's next steps. The analysis is generated from a deep dive into Africa's existing trade strategies at the national and sub-regional levels. A lengthy thread of some highlights:
@ITCnews The database: at the beginning of 2019, there were 79 trade-focused strategies under implementation across Africa. The 11 strategies that did not prioritize any sector and three other regional strategies were left out of the discussion for simplicity.
@ITCnews The remaining 65 strategies were used to shed light on the degree of overlap of sector priorities across countries. Four of the poorest nations (Burundi, CAR, Eritrea, Somalia) did not have any trade strategy in place in 2019.

It has been difficult for me to engage w/ largely dismissive criticisms of #Nigeria’s move to close its land borders with #Benin & #Niger to address rampant smuggling and #Benin’s systematic flouting of Ecowas trade protocols & other treaties signed w/ #Nigeria.
But I feel this issue is too important not to try to improve public understanding about what’s at stake and why the status quo was untenable. So, what follows is a #thread about border security & rules-based trade, which is what the border closure is about at its core.
I’m going to state upfront that I will not engage re this issue on this medium. Instead, I’ll be doing a Facebook Live on Monday w/ @EurasiaGroup colleague Willis Sparks @ 11am EST/5pm Lagos. Please send (constructive) questions w/ hashtag #NaijaBorder & we will address them.
