#avgeek #aviation #USNavy #airplane - Vought OS2U Kingfisher; 1519 built starting 1938. Used by US Navy, Royal Navy, Royal Australian Air Force and the Soviet Navy. 450 hp; 1 x .30 cal (one fixed forward; one ring mounted in back) + bombs or depth charges. 1/
2/ OS=Observation Scout, U=Vought and 2=2nd plane by Vought for Observation Scout duty. Some had wheels vs floats. Were they convertible or built that way? OS2Us flew from land, naval air stations, or were catapult-launched off battleships, heavy cruisers or light cruisers.
3/ OS2Us sat atop a launch car sled on the catapult. An electric motor turned the catapult 30 degrees off the bow as the ship sailed into the wind. A 5" smokeless powder charge rammed the car to 80 mph in .5 seconds, retention pins dropped and the plane was off!

1/ Q: I have to travel by #airplane soon, what can I do to make it as safe as possible? Have any procedures changed?

A: While the @CDCgov still urges individuals to avoid non-essential travel (cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…), here are a few safety precautions you can take:
2/
🚘 If you take a taxi or Uber/Lyft to and from the airport, wear a mask and request that the driver does too (companies are requiring this now: cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…). Ride sharing is not permitted and there may be limits on number of riders per car.
3/
😷 Continue to #WearAMask and practice #SocialDistancing at the airport--in line for check-in, going through security, waiting at the gate, AND boarding.

Because of spacing requirements, lines may be longer and take more time, so you may want to arrive earlier than normal. Image

[THREAD] : While other kids in Lusoi Primary School in Nyeri played regular games, Samuel Mwaura Muthinji spent his time creating aircraft models from iron sheets. Muthinji was fascinated by how huge heavy metallic objects floated in the air and moved from one point to another. Capt. Samuel Muthinji sits in the Dash 8-Q400 cockpit.
His enchantment for flying came at a tender age and he then developed an utmost adoration for flying. After completing his primary school in Nyeri, Muthinji enrolled in Moi Forces Academy near the Moi Air Base in the Eastleigh suburb for his secondary education.
Everyday, when coming out of class heading to the dormitory, Muthinji observed the landing of the aircraft at the nearby Air Base. He made a vow to his peers that one day one time he will become a pilot.

Last fall I went flying with my good friend Tony in a Champ. True low and slow fun flying at sunset.

One of those perfect, smooth as glass, quiet evening flights. #aviation #avgeek #flying #champ #tailwheel #flight #airplane
This flight is worth a thread.

Tony was always there to help me build my Sonex. This day was the first time I took him up in it. We started out in the Sonex.

He’s now building an RV and I love stopping by to help.
So then we hopped in the Champ. Now, I love flying my Sonex....but there is something about puttering along at 1500’ AGL in a Champ that cant be beat. We headed southwest from Clow towards Newark, IL.

There’s a grass strip there - Cushing Field.
