Unceded Wet’suwet’en Yintah (Smithers - BC) –

Gidimt’en Checkpoint response to NDP Attorney General issuing criminal charges to four additional land defenders

(THREAD)
2/Today, under the leadership of NDP Attorney General David Eby, the crown prosecutor criminally charged four land defenders, including Gidimt'en spokesperson Sleydo' Molly Wickham, for breach of an injunction granted to Coastal Gas Link (CGL).
3/The injunction restrains land defenders from accessing their unceded territory.

The Crown declined to charge six others with criminal counts. In court, the Crown acknowledged the RCMP had not properly read the injunction to those present on site...

1/ Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we want to bring everyone’s attention to the yintah. On a day when many politicians will be out showing their faces at events meant to celebrate our culture they only subscribe to when it serves them. ImageImageImage
2/ They do not want to acknowledge and follow the laws of our land. Laws that have been in place since time immemorial. Laws that restrict their access to our territories and resources. No, they just want to see us dance and sing and go home quietly.
3/ The destruction of Wet’suwet’en yintah and the imminent threat to Wedzin Kwa is not what they want to discuss. But this is our reality. One year after the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act became LAW we are still fighting.

it’s been nearly 3 months since i was arrested at gunpoint on Wet’suwet’en Yintah, and i’ve been following a lot of the news coming out about recent events on the territory 1/
it’s very telling how so many politicians are denouncing the events that have taken place, and how silent they all were when our human rights and rights as Indigenous peoples were violated in late november 2/
it’s also disgusting that people view this damage of property and machines as violence, and not the total destruction of our territories, our rivers, and our salmon as the most genocidal and violent act that’s taking place here. 3/

In the wake of what appears to have been an impeccably coordinated attack on #CGL equipment two nights ago, liberal proponents of nonviolence have begun to cast doubt on the motives of the attack and to suggest that it was a false flag attack carried out by the RCMP. (1)
To be clear, we don't know the identity of the attackers and we don't want to. We express our unwavering solidarity with #Wetsuweten land defenders & their supporters who may face increased levels of state repression in the days & weeks ahead. We wish them unity & strength. (2)
The proposed pipeline corridors that run through the unceded territories of the Wet'suwet'en, Gitxsan, Secwepemc, & other Indigenous communities of so-called BC are some of the most important front-lines of the #ClimateCrisis in the world. The stakes are incredibly high. (3)

After a long day in court 10 Land Defenders and supporters arrested on Gidimt’en territory, including Sleydo’ and Jocelyn, remain in custody in so-called Prince George.
Court has been adjourned and will resume at 9am tomorrow.
Cody Merriman was released with conditions to reappear in court on Feb 14th, and to not return to the RCMP/CGL "exclusion area" except to travel through it to his residence.
Faced with this colonial conditional release, the decision was made to sign in order to take care of he and Sleydo's young children - and not in recognition of any wrong doing.

(2/4)
Inspector Ken Floyd, of the RCMP E Division, claimed that Merriman was blockading the roadway and preventing Coast GasLink from conducting their operations, therefore in breach of the BC Supreme Court injunction.

1/3 The thing I haven’t seen NDP partisans take accountability for the fact that the conflict on Wet’suwet’en territory is not an unfortunate and unavoidable circumstance that exists organically and is very difficult to solve.

It’s a conflict the NDP created.

2/3 The pipeline being forced through #Wetsuweten land would not be happening without permits granted and massive subsidies to the industry given by the NDP.

The NDP didn’t just not say no to the pipeline, they invested in it.

3/3 Elders arrested on their own land, assault rifles pointed at women, jailed journalists — these are some of the ugly things this country is built on. This is Canada.

But it’s also the NDP right now.

mismanaged heat dome and premier taking vacation and minimizing hundreds of deaths, and now a mismanaged floodstorm (they didn't even warn people to stay home/off the roads) ....
