I mean, the answer to this rather trollish headline is “yes, absolutely.” But a “movement” by definition never stops—if it does, it‘s history, not a path to the future. CRA launched a rocket; Searching, To All the Boys and #AlwaysBeMyMaybe kept it flying.

The biggest evidence Crazy Rich Asians changed things for Asians in Hollywood isn’t how many other movies have sprung up in the past year, because, uh, it takes more than a year to make a movie. It’s the fact that so many creators are now getting meetings they never had before.
It’s vital to self-audit and especially to reaffirm how important it is for us to wedge open doors in the open position. But it seems weird to me to build a piece around questioning the impact of a single film vs centuries of racist history, less than a year after its release.

I’m going to push back on this. It’s not that ethnicity is “secondary” in #AlwaysBeMyMaybe. That’s like saying oxygen is secondary to human life. When you‘re immersed in something—when you breathe it and are sustained by it—you don’t need to forefront it.

The characters in #AlwaysBeMyMaybe are Asian American through and through. They are culturally suffused by it. They eat it, they cook it, they sing it, they love it. It’s so normal it’s invisible. You forget you’re watching Asian American characters in an Asian American world.
And that is the same alchemy every Asian American who grew up watching FRIENDS experienced. An all-white New York? Not weird! Totally normal!

That’s the subtle way centricity reinforces supremacy. And why works like #AlwaysBeMyMaybe that are normatively inclusive are so vital.

My favorite me quote in this episode:
“In many ways, we’re potty training Hollywood here”
Also: “My parents preferred that I outright fail and get an F because I knew nothing, than that I get a B- or something because I just didn’t try hard enough. More than anything, they hated mediocrity.”

#AlwaysBeMyMaybe needs to be spoken of in the same sentence as MASTER OF NONE, FRESH OFF THE BOAT, CRAZY RICH ASIANS, TO ALL THE BOYS I'VE LOVED BEFORE, SEARCHING and WARRIOR as game-shifters for Asian Americans in pop culture.

Only in some key ways, it's even more important.
That's because #AlwaysBeMyMaybe doesn't just *reinhabit* a genre in which historically we, as Asian Americans, have been erased, as FOTB, CRA, To All the Boys and Searching all did.

It fundamentally challenges and reinterprets it.
If you will, it reverse-colonizes it.

Guys, given the imminent release of #JohnWick3 and #AlwaysBeMyMaybe, I want to talk about working with Keanu Reeves on set. Don’t worry, this is a feel-good story about an awesome dude.
The legend is true. Keanu is a class act on set, someone that deeply cares about the crew and his fellow actors
A prime example: After shooting Keanu’s coverage on a scene, they’d turn the cameras around to shoot the other actor in the scene. At that point Keanu doesn’t have to stick around — he can go hang out in his trailer, relax, let the actor shoot their part with the stand in
