In 638 CE, the Arab armies invaded and occupied Jerusalem, building (intentionally) both the Al Aqsa Mosque and Dome of the Rock on top of the ruins of the First and Second

Hundreds of Temples (or Synagogues if you prefer) have been destroyed in and around Jerusalem over the centuries in a vain attempt to disconnect the Jewish people from their ancient capital.

THREAD

Friday evening, I welcomed #Shabbat with a lovely and inspiring online event hosted by @HarvardHillel.

Attendees ranged from a member of the Class of 1971 to the current undergraduate Hillel president, a rising junior. (1/5)
It was still daylight when the event ended. Checking email, I found a message from Harvard President Larry Bacow, on #antisemitism.

It included this worrying line: "In the past two weeks, Harvard Hillel has been vandalized twice." harvard.edu/president/news… (2/5)
Since this news hadn't come up during the online gathering, I tried locating more specific information over the weekend myself.

But apart from one reference in the Harvard Police public crime log to "vandalism to a banister outside" the building, I could find nothing. (3/5)

THREAD: As we approach #YomHaShoah, the day in the Jewish calendar when we remember the victims of the #Holocaust, we tragically continue to see levels of #antisemitism and antisemitic attacks rising in countries all over the world.
Over the past year or so, working with @White_Animation, I have produced a mini-series of three short animated videos which seek to explain several aspects of the worrying and dangerous return of #antisemitism. You can watch all three here: bit.ly/2VvWZfN.
@White_Animation The first video looks at why #antisemitism is a virus, how it has mutated over time and why its return today presents a danger not just for Jews, but for all who care about our common humanity. bit.ly/2VvWZfN

After the #Holocaust, for the #Jewish people, there were, and are, no words to silence the grief or end the tears. We may say – as Moses said to Aaron – that the victims were innocent, holy, that they died "al kiddush Hashem", “in sanctification of God’s name.”
Surely that is true. Yet nonetheless, “Aaron remained silent.” When all the explanations and consolations have been given, grief remains, unassuaged. We would not be human were it otherwise. That, surely, is the message of the book of Job.

#HolocaustMemorialDay THREAD:

It is eerie & immensely empowering to be in Vienna on #HMD2019, standing before this moving monument to Austrian Jews murdered in the #Holocaust.

Austria not only gave birth to Hitler, but is birthplace of modern Zionism, as envisaged by Herzl.

1/
74 years after the end of the #Holocaust, Hitler's dream to annihilate the Jewish people has been dashed, while Herzl's dream to establish a Jewish state has been fully realized.

THAT, that is the ultimate victory of the Jewish people! #HolocaustMemorialDay #HMD2019

2/
That not only did we survive, but that from the graveyards of Europe and the depths of despair, we went on to re-establish the Jewish state, in our ancestral homeland, Israel. #HolocaustMemorialDay

So, I wrote an article about the horrific #Ofra terror attack in #Israel, incl. PA culpability & int'l community's complicity.

Regrettably, no mainstream EU / US publication was interested. Maybe Jewish lives don't really matter for them?

So, here's my article in #THREAD form:
1. As Israelis, we are a resilient people, and have regrettably experienced more than our fair share of horrific terror attacks. But what happened in the community of Ofra last Sunday 9th December, truly shook us to the core.
2. Following the last night of Chanukah celebrations, one of the most joyous Jewish holidays, a group of Israelis were waiting at a bus station, when Palestinian terrorists drove by in a car and opened fire in a hail of bullets.
