- Greek Phalanxes tended towards the left 🧵-

Today the Greek Phalanx is a well renown ancient military formation known for his effectiveness, but very few know a detail that every general knew back then #svagaiature #History #Historia #AncientGreece #AncientHistory (1/5)
Each hoplite had a shield in his left arm that was used to protect half of him and half of the hoplite to his right. While approaching the enemy was a natural instinct for the soldiers to try to cover their bodies rather than those of the men at their right (3/5)
This meant that the men at their right shifted left trying to maintain the cover of their fellows’ shields starting a chain reaction that made the entire phalanx move diagonally along the battlefield (4/5)

Cuneiform is a writing system developed over 6,000 years ago used in Mesopotamia, Persia, & Ugarit. It provides information about the ancient Sumerian history, & the history of humanity as a whole. It uses wedge-shaped characters impressed on clay tablets. #Archaeology #history
Most agree that cuneiform began as proto-writing-like African drumming and Incan quipa, & evolved into the first full-fledged writing system, with signs corresponding to speech. The root of cuneiform lies in tokens, or chits, used by Sumerians to convey information. #Archaeology

Antirhodos was an island in the eastern harbor of Alexandria, #Egypt, on which a Ptolemaic palace was sited. The island was occupied until the reigns of Septimius Severus & Caracalla & it probably sank in the 4th century, when it succumbed to earthquakes & a tsunami #Archaeology ImageImageImage
There was said to be an earthquake in the eastern Mediterranean near Crete in the year 365. The site now lies underwater, near the seafront of modern Alexandria, at a depth of approximately five metres (16 ft). ImageImageImage
The jewel of the island is, of course, Cleopatra’s now-underwater palace which lies submerged five meters or 16 feet underwater. It is only ironic that, like the site itself, Cleopatra’s final resting place is waiting to be discovered. ImageImageImage

More thoughts on Millar, Emperor in the Roman World (1977). THREAD Hopkins' review (rehashed in a recent essay in the TLS) wished for another book, of "new" social history. Millar's gambit was that documentality, institutions and ideology were tightly bound, and produced...
a totalizing history of the state in action, i.e. government-- through documentality (i.e. the performative nature of language), culture (the specificity of institutions, which "good" i.e. non simplificatory positivism got at), identity (constructivism) and geography...
I think the model has been influential, even when people have disagreed or critiqued the model (notably the problem of just how totalizing the picture is). In the meantime, two big developments in anc history now are 1. the return of Hopkins-style social and economic history...
