On this #AnzacDay , I honour my great uncle Fred Goon, one of 250+ Chinese Anzacs who defied a ban on soldiers who were "not substantially European", and fought for Australia anyway. His story is told is told via @SCMPNews here…
Fred was the son of Louey Fong Goon and Elizabeth Johnson, my great grandparents, who married on the 19th Century goldfields of Bendigo. How could she resist? Look at that guy ... total boss
Fred was born not so long after anti-Chinese riots spurred in part by anger at marriage of Chinese men & white women. But he was a patriot. When WW1 broke out, he was rejected EIGHT TIMES by enlisters. He succeeded on the ninth attempt, reported by the Dubbo Dispatch, Jan 16 1917

Wake up to see myself tagged in a bunch of tweets re an article about online Twitter abuse becoming ‘worse than ever before’ for journalists.

‘Huh’, is my response, mostly cos I’m still waking up.
I check the date - it’s almost #AnzacDay.

‘Huh’, I think, again. This time I am totally awake... but not quite sure of the appropriate way to process these bits of information.
Part of me wants to tell those who are clocking onto the hatred online - ‘m8, welcome to the club! I’ve set up a tent, cmon!’

Because the reality is the internet - as the world - has always been a shitshow of vile abuse.

But then I feel bad, coz this is obviously new for some.

This was you on 15 May 2016, @BorisJohnson, comparing the EU to Hitler. 3/
