@WVUPolicyRes - a 🧵

If you follow me, you'll know that earlier this year I came home to #WestVirginia and @WestVirginiaU @WVUEberly to start the Institute for Policy Research and Public Affairs. Our Twitter account is above, and we'd appreciate a follow.
Our account will cover research, data, and issues important to the state of #WestVirginia and the broader region of #Appalachia, but will touch on issues important nationally in areas like ours.
We also aim to signal-boost research by scholars working in #publicpolicy, #publicadministration, and #stateandlocal #socialscience. If you have work that you think is relevant to our aims, please dm us and we'll be happy to #Tweet you and your work.

The consequences of forcing "normal" under profoundly abnormal conditions:

Everyone is set up to fail.

'And when I ask students what is happening to them, what is making school so hard this year, their consistent response is that it is just "too much." It’s all too much.'
...
"Because even prior to the pandemic, “normal” wasn't working. ...Too many students felt churned through a system that through its schedule, structure, and offerings, communicated that they were not at the center of its design."
...

This nails the consequences of trying to pretend we are in 2019 but with zoom and masks.

We have failed to acknowledge that our needs have changed.

That the expectations need to change.

That the resources need to expand to meet these.

Starting a thread to unpack this @courierjournal article, possibly the deepest dive profile to date on our organization’s work to change the narrative & impact culture by using the power of story to transcend politics & shift the conversation... courier-journal.com/story/life/201…
@courierjournal According to reporter @SavannahEadens: "What started as a social movement and storytelling platform asking people to #DefineAmerican, the #Louisville -based nonprofit is trying to change the narrative around immigration & citizenship in the United States.”
@courierjournal It’s no accident that the conversation about how we @defineamerican is based in #Kentucky, the birthplace of iconic cultural figures such as Lincoln & Ali — & the former Confederate States President Jefferson Davis … It’s my home as well.

It's time for the last live-tweet of the day! I'm at the @WCMSU staff meeting, where we have guest panelists here to talk with us about #queer #appalachia, and the Englishes and stories our students bring to us from rural areas. Leggggo! #WCMSU
@WCMSU First up: @michiganstateu's own Hillary Glasby. She's opening by sharing her history and background; though she's not *from* #Appalachia, she lived in Appalachia for some time. Glasby's talking about the ways in which q#ueerness can be made invisible in Appalachia.
@WCMSU @michiganstateu Her interest in this project: part wanting to make visible the queerness that exists in rural and Appalachian spaces. The prevalent idea is still "If you're queer and in Appalachia you have to leave," but not everyone leaves. How can we honor the stories of who's still there?

Many things @realDonaldTrump said at the WV rally yesterday were completely false, but the thing that is most offensive is that he went into Appalachia and claimed we have “crystal clean water" in this country. Let's talk about that for a second.
First of all, this country was given a "D" in drinking water infrastructure by @ASCEGovRel last year and it will cost $1 trillion to fix it. infrastructurereportcard.org/cat-item/drink…
In most places in Appalachia, you can't drink the water. At all. Ever. Martin County, KY has had contaminated water for decades, and people aren't given notices of violations until months after. scalawagmagazine.org/2018/03/kentuc…
