When Vittorio Amedeo II from #Savoy, the 24th of #December 1713 was crowned King of #Sicily (as seen in the relief from #Palermo's cathedral) he reached the Royal title, a dream his dinasty was seeking for centuries. #Utrecht #Spain #France #Italy Continue #thread 🧵
What he could not know is that in #Sicily he found something maybe more precious, for sure a longer lasting asset than his title as King of Sicily: an #architect from #Messina called Fillippo Juvarra. Continue #thread
Juvarra already worked in #Rome and Naples, pupil of the famous Carlo Fontana (see pic), an #architect from #Ticino, hence of Lombard culture, of paramount importance for Juvarra. In #Messina the sicilian architect was able to offer his services to Vittorio Amedeo II. Continue

#DECinJsy : (1/4) So proud of my Yr13, Level3 #DEC students at @HautlieuSchool on Thursday; presenting the first draft of their outpatienmt building schemes to Peter Garforth, #architect and Director at Morris Architects, Jersey.

These students have had...
(2/4) ... a ridiculously steep learning curve, particularly needing to learn industry-level software mainly in their own time so as not to impinge on curriculum time to deliver the content.
(3/4) We used MS Forms to be able to give each student immediate peer-, teacher- and expert-assessment & feedback.
I'm really fascinated to watch them develop their schemes further, adding site, structures &MEP before the end of the academic year.
(Remember, they're SEVENTEEN!)

"One of the ideas we had with #InterPlanetary was, 'What would it take to make science hedonistic? And instead of telling people to do it, you'd have to tell people to STOP doing it?"

David Krakauer: "Do you have a favorite model or metaphor for #time?"

@JamesGleick: "You've already mentioned a river; that's everybody's favorite. Borges said time is a tiger. People talk about it as a thread. We ONLY talk about time in metaphors." Image

As I recover from #COVID19 I remember the strength of my ancestors, esp my grandfather #DavidOhannessian, who mastered ceramic art in Ottoman Kutahya in the years before WW1, survived exile during the #ArmenianGenocide & founded the art of #Armenianceramics in Jerusalem in 1919
I tell his story in a book #FeastofAshes & share here a sample of his art, which changed the face of Jerusalem, where he carried over the Ottoman Kutahya ceramics tradition. This art continues to flourish today in the studios of several Armenian families. a.co/d/5sJrGkp
One of #DavidOhannessian’s most characteristic works in Jerusalem, the tiled triptych made for St John’s Ophthalmic Hospital in the 1920s, when it was renovated by #architect Austen St Barbe Harrison #Armenianceramics

Architecture is not just about buildings, it’s about society, culture, psychology, politics, landscape, the environment, economics, engineering, mathematics, art, craft, materiality, technology, impact, and projecting the future. It’s about people, place and time.
#Architecture tells a story:of #people who inhabit it,of its #place in context,of #times it's seen. This house is symbolic of use, history, culture, style. Was it always this color? Was it built at once or incrementally? Is it unified or divided inside? So much to peel, layer by layer...
#Vernacular architecture is the architecture born of a place, deeply rooted to the context, created using local materials and age-old technology passed down through generations. The courtyard houses of India are a vernacular archetype for residential architecture...

The #PatnaMuseum and the #Buddha Smriti Park Museum, both in #Patna are my absolute loves ♥️the Patna Museum was established in 1917 with collections that would be safe keeping in mind the local climatic conditions #Bihar #Art #museums #MuseumsWeek #MuseumDocumentation #India ImageImageImage
They ranged from Kurkihara bronzes (best in the world) to large&small stone exquisite sculptures of #Buddha #Bodhisatvas #Mahavir #Jain tirthankaras, Queens, Kings & commoners, but less textiles. Of course, the rich #PatnaSchoolpaintings are treasured here. Pics1-3 are from there
The other photos are of the first #narrative and #interpretive #museum on the life of Buddha. It was opened in 2013 at the #BuddhaSmritiPark (Buddha Memorial Park). It’s at the site of Patna’s old #Bankipore jail, and now is one of the most peaceful place in this chaotic city ImageImageImageImage
