Let's explore Macbeth as tragic hero. A thread 👇
Macbeth fits the definition of a tragic hero outlined by Aristotle in his work 'Poetics.' He starts as highly renowned, but a single tragic flaw - in this case, ambition - leads to his downfall. #Macbeth #TragicHero
Other characters initially praise Macbeth's nobility and bravery. However, upon meeting the witches and hearing their prophecy, Macbeth's ambition is awakened, setting the stage for his tragic journey. #CharacterAnalysis

“Whence is it that you found the truth, o, Plato? … I know your teachers, although you seek to conceal them: you learned geometry from the Egyptians, astronomy from the Babylonians, you received pious invocations from the Thracians; the Assyrians taught you a great deal. > 1/2
>And, to the extent the laws [you expound] are true and glorify God, you have benefited yourself from the Jews.”

—Clement of Alexandria, Protrepticus 2/2
Klement adds that Plato took up the doctrine of the immortal soul from Pythagoras, who in turn had appropriated this from the Egyptians.

As I am growing older, I have started enjoying reading and appreciating certain aspects of the pessimistic philosophy of #Schopenhauer.
One has to read at least these philosophers to develop a broader understanding of society, logic and methods of enquiry->
1. Hume
2. Descartes
3. Hegel
4. Marx
5. Schopenhauer
6. Kant
7. Wittgenstein
8. Berkeley
9. Isaiah Berlin
10. AJ Ayer
11. Anthony Kenny
12. Nietzsche
Of course, the list above is expandable.
I cannot write the names of all philosophers, logicians, and methodologists in one tweet.
Yes, Anthony Quinton, P.F. Strawson, Quinne, David Donaldson and Amartya Sen (Philosophy of Economics) can be added to the suggested reading list.

A reminder thread of things #Aristotle did NOT say

1. “It is the mark of an educated mind to entertain a thought without accepting it”

nope.

sententiaeantiquae.com/2018/09/23/mem…
2. “A Whole is greater than the sum of its parts”

This really popular misattribution may be a poor translation of the Metaphysics
3. “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” [and many variations thereof]

This one has absolutely no basis. Aristotle says many things about education, this just ain’t one of them.

My first encounter with the #Persian #Wittgenstein (1889-1951) in Iran was buying a copy of a translation of #PhilosophicalInvestigations at the Tehran book fair in 1999 - a thread on Wittgenstein in Iran 1/
This translation by Ferydoun Fatemi (d. 2008), a well-known translator of philosophical works with Nashr-e markaz seems to be based on the English 2/
Standard accounts of Wittgenstein do not tend to look at his reception beyond the English speaking context - but for that there are two two excellent introductions which partly problematise the 'early' vs 'late' and SEP entry plato.stanford.edu/entries/wittge… 3/

Henri Bergson (1859-1941) and his processual approach to self, matter, creativity, intuition and free will had an influence not just on continental philosophy but also on #existentialism and #personalism in the #Islamicate milieu - a thread on #postcolonial #Bergson 1/ ImageImageImage

1. I used to work more actively in #moralpsychology. In particular, I thought that #Aristotle’s moral psychology was more sophisticated than a lot of contemporary models. Part of the reason was his view that emotions and beliefs can change one another.
2. I wrote about implications of this idea for #practicalethics here cmu.edu/dietrich/philo…. I still like this work. At some point, though, this work requires more than reflection on Aristotle, since it is based largely on empirical claims.
3. When I see a paper like this sciencedirect.com/science/articl… my initial reaction is something like “Aristotle was so far ahead of his time...l” then I think “I’m glad to see empirical support for this...” and then I think, “in isolation this is just confirmation bias and I need...

#Faith happens only when the #duality has fallen; it is not a #belief against #doubt.

When belief and doubts both have disappeared, then something happens which is faith, which is #trust.
When desiring disappears there is trust!

#Trust means moving with #life without any #expectations, #desires, demands of your own. Not #asking, not #complaining. Whatsoever happens, #accepting it with deepest #gratitude and #awareness.
Simply seeing the #reality, that the #opposite is implied everywhere, #trust happens.

It is not in any #helplessness that you #accept. It is simply the nature of #life that the opposite is implied.

Looking at the #fact, #truth, deep inside you, gives you trust..

Over the past few days as we have made many tweets with clear political messages and added some posts of the same character, we have had a more than a few followers complain about political content (1/10)
Many of the complaints were similar to last year's demands that we stay unpolitical or face unfollowing.

We do want to share the love, wisdom, and wonder from the ancient world and bring enlightenment and joy where possible, but studying antiquity and its inheritance is not simply about admiration, adulation, and emulation.

THE TRUE ORIGIN OF RESTAURANTS
Thread

Centuries ago, like now, there were hostels, posadas or taverns where food was served in exchange for money, as in a thermopolium in Rome (snack-bar) where we, readers of @LRB @TwitterBooks @nytimes @NewYorker @washingtonpost, would often go
After the #fall of the #Roman #Empire in these businesses food was served in shared tables and consisted of a fixed menu, according to what was already prepared. Even the nobility, like celebrities today, would frequent when traveling.
But, when did the concept and business of restaurants truly begin?
It began with Paracelsus (1493-1541), a brilliant Swiss physician who modernized medicine with rational clinical judgment and changed the way we eat in the #Western #world.
