Here’s an interesting problem regarding the #aesthetics in reproduction of #digital #image|s. (Interesting to me, at least, and also, maybe, to people like @_menkman, @jbirken, @Sierra_Offline, @kevindriscoll and @GIFmodel). 1/38
What I’ll say is true for all digital images, in a way. (And more generally, for all works of art.) But I want to focus on one type of images and on one set of aesthetic qualities in particular here. 2/38
The problem that’s bothering me is this: What is the proper way to show an early digital #screen image in #print? (Reproduced as a figure in an academic monograph, for example.) 3/38

New preprint:
"Compression ensembles quantify aesthetic complexity and the evolution of visual art" 🎨🖼️📈
by @AndresKarjus @schichmax @sebastianahnert @mcanet @tillmannohm
🔓arxiv.org/abs/2205.10271
1/🧵 Image
2/7 How does it work? Take an image, run it through a large n of visual filters (blur, gray, edges, etc), compress the variants, record file sizes. Yields a vector where each value expresses some aspect of visual aesthetics, resulting in an explainable vector space. Simple&fast! Image
3/7 But does it... work? Test against human vis complexity ratings: correlates very well &outperforms plain compression. Also designed downstream tasks such as author identification: also works quite well. Again, no #deeplearning or pretrained models here, just image compression! Image

#NFTs are a Second Renaissance a thread:

#nftartist #nftarthistory #nftcommunity #arthistory
The Art Renaissance was the most significant development for Art for two reasons - 1) it was the start of banks prescribing retainable value to physical art and 2) was the birth of a NEW PORTABLITIY that gave artists GLOBAL EXPOSURE.
Prior to the renaissance most art was painted on wooden panels which were incredibly inconvenient to transport especially internationally. So what is an Italian artist, living in Venice supposed to do? Image

1/The Parisian #ballerinas painted, drawn & sculpted by #Degas were young, poor & wretched souls. Exploited & used, the youngest were known as ‘les petit rats’. Wealthy men, called ‘abonnés’, paid subscriptions for backstage access to them & ‘privileges’. #RefuseToBeUsed ImageImage
2/ Abonnés, the powerful & wealthy male subscribers who paid for backstage ‘access’ (often sexual) to ballerinas in #Paris, can be seen in many paintings. #Degas, also an #abonné, used & exploited the young girls for his art, discarding them when no longer of artistic use. ImageImageImage
3/#Misogynist #Degas reportedly said “women invented the word ‘suffering’”. What a lovely man. Not. Remember that when looking at the beautiful works of art he created. Remember the miserable existence of the exploited & abused #ballerinas of #Paris.

Our #arthistory PDD panel on Teaching and education featured @LeniaKouneni who is 1 of only 2 permanent lecturers in art history at @univofstandrews and before this held multiple short-term and fixed term contracts.

She finished her PhD in 2009 and had a short career break in 2012 to have children. Lenia sought out her education-focused position which is teaching focused rather than research focused.

Teaching-only roles can be perceived as lesser but perceptions are shifting and they are a serious career path – TEF was introduced in 2017 to assess the quality of teaching.

Research has been put on hold following the closure of libraries, archives and museums; fellowships have been postponed or, in some cases, cancelled; publications delayed; and, in many cases, our projects have been reframed and remoulded as a result of the pandemic.

Many of us have paused our work to support our loved ones or volunteered to support the local community. We have vigorously adapted our way of teaching turning to online and hybrid delivery to guide and advise our students.

🎨⏳📜Nautilus Cup, Chicago Art Institute
During the Age of Discovery, European artists were inspired by the exotic materials suddenly available to them. Goldsmiths seized on the opportunity to include wondrous and seemingly magical materials -
-including coconuts, ivory, ostrich eggs, and, in this case, a nautilus shell from the Indian Ocean - into works of art that celebrated both nature and artifice. These types of objects were also popular with collectors during the 19th c, when the mounts on this cup were reworked.

📖📚⏳🕯✨🎨 Thumbelina is a literary fairy tale written by Hans Christian Anderson.

An adventure story from the feminine point of view with its moral being people are happiest with their own kind. They point out that Thumbelina is a passive character, the victim of ... Image
...circumstances; whereas her male counterpart Tom Thumb (one of the tale's inspirations) is an active character, makes himself felt, and exerts himself.

Danish critics were not enthusiastic.

Hans Christian Andersen in 1836 Image
The informal, chatty style of the tales and their lack of morals were considered inappropriate in children's literature.

Hi everyone! I’m @lindasteer, Assoc Prof of Art History and Visual Culture in the @miwsfpa at Brock University. It’s great to have the opportunity to present a keynote in such a unique format for @OpenArtHist #OAHdebrief2020 1/
Both @brocku and I are in St Catharines, Niagara Region, in Ontario, the traditional lands of the Haudenosaunee and Anishnaabe peoples. The Dish with One Spoon Wampum agreement covers this area and all of us who live here. #OAHdebrief2020 2/
This means that we share this land & ensure the dish is never empty – we take no more than we need – and we use a spoon, not a knife, and keep the peace. I’m a settler and am grateful for the resources and friendship of First Nations, Métis, & Inuit people. #OAHdebrief2020 3/

#ShortStory :

THE TRUTH COMING OUT OF THE WELL
The world famous painting, The Truth Coming Out of the Well, by Jean-Léon Gérôme, 1896.
According to a 19th century legend, the Truth and the Lie meet one day. The Lie says to the Truth: "It's a marvellous day today"! The Truth looks up to the skies and sighs, for the day was really beautiful. They spend a lot of time together, ultimately arriving beside a well.
The Lie tells the Truth: "The water is very nice, let's take a bath together!" The Truth, once again suspicious, tests the water and discovers that it indeed is very nice. They undress and start bathing.

I’m tired of the clickbait and sensationalist « #discovery  » trope in #arthistory . The Angers Tapestry was rediscovered in the 19th century, (not unusual for tapestries) not by the guardian yesterday 1/. Forgotten French tapestry/The Guardian theguardian.com/artanddesign/2…

The gallery hosting it was opened in 1950 - but before that it was exhibited in the episcopal palace, where the artist Jean #Lurçat was so enthralled upon seeing it that he created his masterpiece Chant du Monde. Now also hosted in Angers. 3/
