A little late for #AncientSiteSunday, but here is a thread on the incredible Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion! 🏛️

(1/5) Located at Cape Sounion on the Attic peninsula, this ancient Greek temple holds a commanding view of the Aegean sea.

#Classics #Greece #Archaeology #Athens
(2/5) Originally, an Archaic-period temple sat on the site. Made of tufa, it was destroyed c. 480 BCE during the #Persian invasion of Greece. Despite being destroyed, the Athenians placed a captured Persian trireme on its ruins following the allied Greek victory in 479.
(3/5) The surviving temple was constructed between 444 - 440 BCE, and serves as one of the major monuments of the Athenian golden age.

Later described by Strabo as a "noteworthy settlement", it remained a significant cult centre into the #Roman imperial period.

On the occassion of #OXI day, I also want to highlight the personal story of a great and sadly still rather unknown Greek-jewish hero: Mordecaios Frizis (1893-1940).

He was a colonel in the #Greek military and died as first officer and war hero during the Italian #invasion.
First, a little background: #Jews have lived in Greece since pre-Christian times, and the oldest Jewish communities in Europe have their roots there. They were an integral part of society for millennia until the barbarism of the 20th century reached the country.
Almost 60,000 Jews, more than 75% of them from Thessaloniki, were cruelly murdered mainly in the gas chambers of the #Auschwitz and #Treblinka extermination camps. 97% of the Jews in #Thessaloniki did not survive the #Holocaust. Today, only about 5000 live in Greece.

Today is the first #newmoon after the summer #solstice meaning it's 1 Hekatombaion - Athenian New Year! The Athenians had a number of calendars in use; Hekatombaion was the first month of the lunisolar 'festival calendar'.
New holders of civic offices would be sworn in, swearing oaths, with the gods as their witness, to fulfil their duties in a manner befitting the office. Athenian #democracy relied on its citizens' (free Athenian men) direct participation in the councils, assemblies and courts.
The latest batch of #ephebes - 18-year-old sons of citizens - were called up. They'd swear an oath to defend Athens and never shame the city. Two years of training would start turning boys into well-disciplined #hoplites; they gained a cloak, a spear, a shield and #citizenship.

#Greece: A pro-gov journalist posted the following poll on the matter of the hunger + thirst strike of a prisoner who is now on renal failure.

Her comment: Some say that "society is divided" (implies that 70% of society supports the murder of a prisoner by the Greek gov).
Her lack of understanding of institutions and principles is astounding. She is a typical sample of what passes as a mainstream journalist in #Greece.

Tweets below hers, point out that human rights violations by the government cannot be discussed through polls. Ever.
The shitshow is about to unfold in #Greece, where the economy has contracted 8.5% officially (for 2020).

The government needs this prisoner murder because they want riots to break out. They will then sell "law and order" to their conservative voters who are abandoning ship.
