“A Burst of Light: Living with Cancer"
The year I became fifty felt like a great coming together for me. I was very proud of having made it for half a century, and in my own style. “Time for a change,” I thought, “I wonder how I’m going to live the next half.”

🧵#ODT in 1934 #AudreLorde was born. To celebrate the 87th birthday of the great “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet”, we are going to tweet excerpts on her cancer #livedexperience & politics from The Cancer Journals (1980) and A Burst of Light (1988) #histmed #bcsm #bccww
"The Cancer Journals"

“Each woman responds to the crisis that breast cancer brings to her life out of a whole pattern, which is the design of who she is and how her life has been lived. The weave of her every day existence is the training ground for how she handles crisis.
Some women obscure their painful feelings surrounding mastectomy with a blanket of business-as-usual, thus keeping those feelings forever under cover, but expressed elsewhere.

We lost my mentor, #AudreLorde, OTD in 1992. She would be 85 now.
I wrote this piece about our first meeting, our first dance and how she changed my young life and propelled me forward. She was extraordinary and the blessing of knowing her remains with me.

Audre Lorde remains one of our most treasured lesbian feminist icons. I will forever be grateful to her for her friendship and mentoring.
"I am listening to what fear teaches. I will never be gone. I am a scar, a report from the frontlines, a talisman, a resurrection. A rough place on the chin of complacency." --Audre Lorde

There is no denying that history has been dominated by stories about men, and by men, and this winter, we’re shining a (candle)light on women and their stories. A rectangular stand holds a collection of different sized candles in front of a tapestry decorated with embroidered leaves
This autumn sees the centenary of two political milestones in the fight for gender equality – the election of the first female Member of Parliament, Nancy Astor, and the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act. Nancy Astor stands surrounded by a crowd of men
To mark this centenary, we turn to one of the most important modernist authors – #VirginiaWoolf – and her seminal works, A Room of One’s Own and Three Guineas:

Gentrification isnt simply “neighborhood improvement” but is SYSTEMIC use of private forces & PUBLIC POLICY 2 forcibly displace low-income & vulnerable residents/biz owners from land & replace them w/more affluent ppl/uses to generate capital returns. Just ✔️ the root word. /3
