This week at the #NationalPressClub, Australia’s Prime Minister @ScottMorrisonMP outlined his new vision for the nation in the face of catastrophic fires.

Let’s call it the ‘Shonk Doctrine’.

Here’s a thread on the ‘Shonk Doctrine’ and how it works.

#auspol #shonkdoctrine
Morrison’s Shonk Doctrine combines elements of what @NaomiAKlein called ‘Shock Doctrine’ with a whole lot of our Prime Minister’s characteristic shonkiness.

It is a dangerous combination.
Naomi Klein coined the expression ‘Shock Doctrine’ to describe the phenomenon of vested interests using moments of ‘shock’ (eg wars & disasters) to force through aggressive neoliberal policies targeting ordinary people and the public domain:

THREAD #AustralianFires

As the fires continue, much of Australia's media - outlets owned by the Murdoch family - are not only dismissing the scientific consensus on the climate crisis, but are peddling false narratives instead.

@RodTiffen & @AmyRemeikis gave us some examples.
Murdoch's outlets serve as message multipliers for each other.

Columnists and commentators - including some prominent climate sceptics - get time and space across Murdoch media platforms from TV to print to the web.

@JamesPainter61 and @AmyRemeikis explain how this works.
Murdoch media wields political clout in Australia. The coal mining industry is even more influential.

Put the two together, and Australian politicians face a losing battle for real reform of climate policy.

@RodTiffen and @JamesPainter61 explain the Murdoch-mining connection.

1/12. The #Australianfires have been an absolute disaster for wildlife and nature. But there is an important background story: even before the fires, the Coalition government had declared War on Nature.

Here’s a thread:
2/12. The Coalition government’s #WarOnNature has been prosecuted through funding cuts, attempted law changes, support for disastrous projects and attacks on environmental defenders.

Here are 7 examples:
3/12. In December 2013, the newly elected federal Coalition government slashed $10 million in funding from the public-interest Environmental Defenders Offices.

Feeling powerless in the face of FIVE MILLION hectares of burnt bushland #AustralianFires?

Here's 5 simple steps each and every one of us could take for immediate impact, in spite of our denialist government.

Make them your 2020 resolution. Encourage F&F to do the same
1. Move your super (401k) to a fund that invests ethically, instead of leaving your money in a fund that that actively funds fossil fuel industries (cost to you = 10 mins to fill out the transfer form). Many of these funds outperform the major funds. Easy.
businessinsider.com.au/divest-climate

2. Move your banking (loans, savings, everyday) to a bank that refuses to fund fossil fuel industries (cost to you = 10 mins to open a new account, maybe 30 mins to apply for a home loan transfer). Easy.

“It may well be up to 30% of the population in that region because up to 30% of their habitat has been destroyed," Australia's environment minister, @sussanley, told @ABCaustralia last Friday. "We’ll know more when the fires are calmed down and a proper assessment can be made.”
Up to 28,000 koalas lived in the region before the fires, The Associated Press reported.

55 years ago Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin...

Gough Whitlam, the Australian Prime Minister, was touring Syracuse, Sicily at the time and flew to Darwin upon hearing of the disaster.
The Aus government began a mass evacuation by road and air; all of the Defence Force personnel throughout Australia, along with the entire Royal Australian Air Force's fleet of transport planes, were recalled from holiday leave and deployed to evacuate civilians from Darwin
Thirteen ships of the Royal Australian Navy were used to transport supplies to the area as part of Operation Navy Help Darwin; the largest humanitarian or disaster relief operation ever performed by the Navy.
