1/I use archives and interviews to take on assumptions about the strength and ability to control of successive governments in Rwanda before the genocide. I show how the governments of the two post-independence Republics sought and often struggled to cement their rule.
2/The book is also a call to take a closer look at the more ordinary authoritarian strategies, patterns, and forms of decay too often overlooked when studying authoritarian contexts through the lens of critical junctures.

What is coming between now and 2035? Climate change: increasingly random and extreme weather, flooding, drought, famine, mass migration, pandemics, social upheaval, institutional collapse, automation, economic collapse, tribalism, authoritarianism, war, and general chaos.
Global warming will continue. Human population continues to increase. War drives a need for "energy independence". Entangled corporations, states, and individuals with direct economic interest in extraction and consumption of fossil fuels will continue to fight for their use.
And there are already feedback loops in play: the warming oceans, the melting ice caps, the thawing permafrost which is releasing trapped methane and CO2, the deforestation both man made and from increased forest fires.

In 2020, #Trump, and #GOP legislators, not only undermined trust in elections, with false claims repeatedly debunked, they told partisan state legislators to send electors for Trump in states where voters selected Biden; a blatant rejection of #democracy.
It was only laws, and honorable officials holding to those laws, that prevented the #coup from succeeding.
