Dear allistics,

You probably know that fingernails on a chalkboard sounds viscerally wrong

Now imagine that most stores, schools, etc are filled with people scraping their fingernails on chalkboards

And when you ask people to stop, they act like you're weird for your NOPE
You're trying to focus on a test, but you can't think because your teacher is dragging her fingernails on the chalkboard

You're talking to a friend, but you have no idea what they're saying because the screeching NOPE is all you can hear
You don't even mention the jarring sound anymore, because everyone else is fine with it so obviously you just need to suck it up and deal

Also last time you brought it up, people thought you were exaggerating and making it up for attention

#AutisticWhileBlack I will never write a book about my son without his wholehearted consent. And because he is completely disinterested in social media and only gives consent a few of his pictures to be posted, that is a big nope.
@brookewinters33 Once I realized that my son was not comfortable with activism, and he was extremely shy, I ceased bringing him to activist related events.
@brookewinters33 Then there is the question of consent. Over the years since I have been blogging, He may have seemed to give consent for the use of his photos but I can't measure whether he realizes how many people can see his pictures on the Internet as a result.

#CripTheVote #AutisticWhileBlack or Brown means lifelong institutional abuse, being shot at by police, then being evicted from group homes.miamiherald.com/news/local/art…
I said that the extension of the CARES act going to things that don't help autistics & their families was wrong, I got backlash. This is what billions of dollars of misallocated federal funding means. Arnaldo shouldn't have to continually pay the price for budget cut demands.
Save him. If we can't save him we can't save anyone.

I have my own health issues, work, and parenting to do. Feel vindicated and move on. This moving assault on anyone who doesn't agree with others is now toxic. The ugliness of questioning my disabilities and intentions anf attacking those who know me personally is too much.
What disturbs me is people who know me personally have tried to explain things and been attacked defending me. Once an idea central to a person's identity is questioned folks will attack in this way. Changing biases is the job for me. I expect this degree of verbal abuse.
If the wish of one person to have things their way is so powerful that those I respect are attacked, something is very wrong in our community. I will not be blocking or muting anyone. I will be asking everyone to stop and keep their magazine name and label.

Thread: The job difficulty bellcurve for autistics & other neurodivergents

After my recent thread on time management as people management, I got comments saying things like, "This is why I'm afraid to go back to work or try to get a more advanced job!" /1 #NeurodiverseSquad
That stuck with me, because I worried I was actually demotivating people to pursue work. Employment is already hard for autistics and other neurodivergents. 80% of us are unemployed. I'm willing to bet many more are underemployed. I never intended to make it seem even harder. /2
So I want to be clear: the issues I talked about, the social communication and expectactions management, are advanced-level working issues. I get to deal with them while enjoying every other possible office job perk: fulltime, regular hours, vacation pay, benefits. /3

Right now, @poormagazine is working on building housing in East Oakland.
@poormagazine There is basically no low-income housing any more. Leroy Moore feels like he’s hanging on by a thread, and he’s not alone. When 45 pushes to exterminate housing programs, the only person who came out against it was @RepMaxineWaters.
@poormagazine @RepMaxineWaters And it’s not just housing. IDEA, funding for special education, had NEVER been fully Federally funded. People with disabilities of all ages remain under attack in the US.

NY judges denied Black+autistic Darius McCollum the right to appeal lifelong commitment as incurably dangerous bc autism. Not the appeal. The right to it. White supremacy+ableism.

Darius McCollum has been targeted by anti-Black racism+ableism for literal YEARS for the crime of living while autistic+Black. He's been in+out of NYC jails for expertly, though unlawfully, driving MTA buses+trains. Instead of hiring Darius, MTA disqualifies him due to a record.
Last year, NY courts recommended lifelong institutionalization to "solve" the "problem" that Darius presents for existing as a Black autistic man. A judge found that Darius is inherently dangerous simply because he is autistic. Now, they've weaponized law against him yet again.

Since Simon Baron-Cohen seems to have suddenly discovered autistic people’s voices, I want to make a few comments about how damaging his systemising/empathising construct is, from an intersectional point of view.
To sum it up, Simon Baron-Cohen has hypothesised that people have 2 general strengths, empathising (connecting w/people) and systemising (connecting w/objects and seeing how they work).

NTs are supposed to be better at the former, while autistic people are better at the later.
While he claims this is neutral and says that both autistic and non-autistic people have strengths, the implications are actually really dangerous for a number of reasons.

Baron-Cohen sees empathy as a core human trait. Since autistic people are supposedly deficient…
