I would like to clarify recent statements in the press regarding the ##H5N1 virus detected recently in #Cambodia that were taken out of context. The confusion surrounds the implication that the virus has already gone “through” humans, and may be misinterpreted. (A thread - 1/)
For clarification, #H5N1 virus sequenced from the case in Cambodia shows certain changes that are anticipated and have been found in previous avian and/or human strains when they go from a bird to a human. (2/)
This does *NOT* indicate that the virus is mutating or adapting to become human-to-human transmissible, nor does it state that the virus has already transmitted between humans. (3/)

"A "highly pathogenic" strain of the #H5N1 bird flu has been reported in #China's Hunan province, Chinese officials said.
The outbreak was reported on a farm in the city of Shaoyang in the Hunan province, according to #China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Of the 7,850 chickens on the farm where the outbreak occurred, 4,500 died of the #H5N1 avian flu.
The Chinese government said it culled 17,828 chickens as a result of the H5N1 outbreak. According to the World Health Organization, while H5N1 can be transmitted to humans, typically through contact with dead birds or a contaminated environment.

Hey friends. We’re coming to you today with some somber news. A commercial flock of turkeys in Johnston County, NC has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). This location is ~ an hour away from the Refuge and HPAI is highly fatal to domesticated birds.
In response, we have been forced to make the unfortunate decision to keep all of our birds indoors until the threat of ceases. We've also implemented many biosecurity protocols. In order to provide the best quality of life to our birds, we have been making adjustments such as:
-shifting some birds around to create more indoor space for each flock
-implementing daily cleaning of all bird houses
-providing evening snacks of rotating fruit and vegetables (in addition to maintaining our morning enrichment program)

2/10 Around 12-13 December, the first observations of avian flu in cranes at the Hula Valley arrived, following three H5N1-positive cases elsewhere and in other bird species since mid-October.
3/10 With @SashaPekarsky and Idan Talmon, we then checked the situation with our GPS-tracked cranes, 11 of them were in Israel in the relevant period. We noticed clear movement/behavioral changes in few individuals.
