BREAKING

Boris Johnson standing down as an MP with immediate effect.

“I am now being forced out of Parliament by a tiny handful of people”

Quite the Friday night news drop - all on @BBCNewsnight tonight
“I’m sad to be leaving Parliament - at least for now - but am bewildered and appalled that I can be forced out, anti democratically by a committee chaired by HArriet Harman” - Boris Johnson in a statement
The statement from Johnson attacks PM Rishi Sunak

“We must not be afraid of a properly Conservative Govt… why have we so passively abandoned the prospect of a Free Trade Deal with the US.. PArty has the time to recover its mojo and its ambition and win the next election”

So now the Tories have attacked & blamed the clergy, the judiciary, teachers, the left, the elite, immigrants, "human rights" & all our direct neighbours. And the UK media still are scared to call it what it is.

You know who else attacked all of the above?
#FascistTories
This is the latest Tory delight, for those who missed it.

The result of our media sticking their heads a. up Johnson's arse or b. in the sand, is people now publicly calling for those not embracing their idea of Sunlit Uplands to be sent to Rwanda.

Former UK Nat Security Adviser Sir Mark Lyall Grant told me after @BBCNewsnight he thought cultural sanctions would be highly effective in communicating directly to Russian people their isolation caused by Putin invasion.

Especially throwing Russia out of World Cup qualification
Glad to see our guest from last night the Ukrainian MP @kiraincongress is safe this morning after having to cut short @bbcNewsnight interview due to air raid sirens and Russian attacks on Kiev - she showed us the Kalashnikov she has received to defend Ukraine
And Latvian deputy PM and defence min @Pabriks

“No matter how hard sanctions..will not stop Russians marching on Kyiv or Mariupol. But we can send Stingers, Javelins, vests. our moral duty.don't need only to watch the screens and see how these people are dying defending Europe”

The farce that is #facecoverings & #facemasks against #COVID19 , a thread.
First up, #WHO, in latest ‘interim guidance’ of 1 Dec, on ‘potential benefits & harms’ of #masks: apps.who.int/iris/bitstream…. (note 1st ‘potential benefit’ is ‘reduced spread of respiratory droplets’ - which is not actually the same as reducing transmission, is it?) Image
But you’re convinced the benefits outweigh the harms and go for masking. I mean, forcing people to keep a piece of fabric/paper and plastic on their faces, how hard can that be, eh? Well, here’s the WHO’s most recent interim guidance again. It’s not as simple as it looks, is it? Image

Another excellent and careful referenced thread and article from @pmdfoster and the @FT about PPE, the changing guidance and what is available and what is safe.

Of course there’s a lot of explaining to do about the CV19 170+ dead health and social care staff in 8 weeks.
Link to the @NursingNotesUK site here.

How many Health and Social Care personnel dead feom CV in Germany & France (where there have been some naked protests!)

nursingnotes.co.uk/covid-19-memor…
What about Ireland, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Belgium, South Korea (similar in size to England), China, USA? Is anyone looking into this?

Sounds like perfect for excellent @FT data analysis issue to me

And a subject close to the heart of most people

Who knew the general election defeat was coming? Lisa and Emily put their hands up. Keir and RLB don't. #BBCNewsnight
Lisa Nandy seems very nervous.
Starmer seeks to "correct the record" on the "idea that we haven't spoken out" on antisemitism. Thornberry says she and Starmer both spoke out in shad cab. Asked, Rebecca didn't? "Rebecca did, I think you’ll find," RLB says. "Sorry, I don’t remember," Thornberry says smiling.

Here's the truth about Brexit, the supposed "punishment" that some people claim the EU is trying to inflict on the UK, and the real consequences of no deal. Buckle in, it's quite long. Better to be thorough than to leave stuff out! 1/15
#bbcnewsnight #skynews #c4news #itvnews
The EU isn't punishing the UK for Brexit. They're merely following the rules of the EU club. Losing the benefits of EU club membership IS the punishment. In the same way as no longer being able to use the weights or fitness equipment is punishment for quitting the local gym. 2/15
You might well put on weight because your gym membership lapsed. But you wouldn't turn around and say "Hey, the gym's punishing me for giving up my membership by making me fat!" That's the consequence of losing your gym membership, but it's not the fault of the gym. 3/15
