Watched the #BBCPanorama programme about long Covid.

Layla Moran said there should be compensation for those disabled at work by Covid / long Covid.

But the programme gave the impression that this is all historical.

Covid/long Covid is still happening, the pandemic isn’t over.
No mention was made of the ways we could reduce the burden of Covid / long Covid by reducing the risk of catching Covid, for example through clean air.

I’ve worked with the #bbcpanorama team, meeting NHS staff with long Covid who say they feel abandoned. Some face going onto half pay, others are worried about losing their jobs. A short 🧵 bbc.co.uk/news/health-64…
Rachel is a nurse. She caught covid in October 2020 and hadn’t been able to work since. She has a long list of long Covid symptoms. So far, she’s been on full pay, but is expecting it to go down to half soon.
At the start of the pandemic, new sick pay rules meant most NHS staff would be paid if they were off with covid. That ended last year, but for many there was a buffer. So some are expecting their pay to go down to half soon.

Plenty of justified outrage following #BBCPanorama’s film of staff abusing patients in a secure mental health unit.

It made headline news. Investigations are under way. Staff have been suspended.

But outrage alone will not prevent a repeat.

Short 🧵 & TW.
Many felt weary over a too-familiar story.

That was my reaction. 5y ago I wrote about how my mother was assaulted in a care home - the perpetrator was erased from their professional register thanks to evidence from other staff.

No action was taken against the care home itself.
Individual responsibility is important here. No-one should excuse the member of staff who treats a patient cruelly.

But abuse takes place in a wider system that can be complacent & culpable. And that is where prevention lies.
