Another day of rage & despair, with a 12 yr old trans child lost. What is to blame? A short thread:

Firstly, a UK media culture that paints trans people as a threat & a problem. Looking at #BBCTransphobia & today @TimHarford. Trans kids hear how BBC speaks about them.
@TimHarford Secondly, UK schools that are completely failing a large number of trans kids. I know so many bleak stories.

Too many kids face discrimination, segregation, chronic stress, in unsafe environments.

Of course schools are under a lot of pressure. But so are trans kids. 2/
@TimHarford Thirdly, an NHS that continues to utterly fail trans kids.

Failure to provide essential healthcare. Waiting lists of 3 years+. Hurdle after hurdle. Stupid question after stupid question. Appointments that harm & upset. Trans kids do not have equal access to healthcare. 3/

First Day, a 4 part mini series about & starring a Trans girl starting at a new school begins today at 17:00 on @cbbc. It is a fantastic, true to life account of the experience of going to school as a Trans child with a supportive family. I urge you watch…
Thank you also to @BBC for buying this wonderful programme from @OzKidsTV @kirstysan @JulieKalceff. "We cannot be what we cannot see" @Disclosure_Doc. I hope this marks the start of a shift away from #BBCTransphobia & more diverse, inclusive, & representive programme making.
There is also a wonderful teaching resource to accompany the First Day series from @OzKidsTV @ABCEducationAU. Find the toolkit here:…

My response to a request from @BBCRadio4 for an interview. It was just after an atrocious BBC documentary, an accompanying @BBCNewsnight special & a Moral Maze which included a speaker who stated that parents of trans children were 'child abusers'. Could be today. It was 2017. Image
All of my suggestions for areas of focus that aren't stigmatising, invasive or harmful still apply, with the caveat that the waiting list for GIDS has since nearly doubled from 14 months to 27 (with no current access to Endocrine service due to Covid). #BBCTransphobia
Thinking about it, that may have been the last time I was asked to appear on Radio 4...

Yesterday @deb_cohen used the term 'Rapid Onset' gender dysphoria in her interview with @BBCRadio4. The term originates from a single controversial study (Littman 2018, PLUS One) which then retracted ROGD "as a formal mental health diagnosis" The 'theory' is anti-trans hokum 1/
ROGD is an invented neologism peddled by 'Gender Critical' (anti trans) parent groups who attempt to seek harmful conversion or reparative therapies to change their trans children's gender identity. See recent @TeenVogue investigation by @herong 2/…
No major health body has endorsed the theory of ROGD, and many have publicly denounced the theory, including The World Association for Transgender Health @wpath 3/…
