VISION 5: Institutions and Why They Matter (Contd).

The institutions of the modern state are a relatively recent phenomenon. They go back only about 300 years or so, even in the western world. As Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson explain in their book
"Why Nations Fail", a major factor in the wealth of the western powers today lies in the evolution of inclusive institutions that, over time, checked the absolute power of European monarchs, created a level playing field in society, governance and the economy, and led to the
Industrial Revolution. The European nations that went through this process first such as England, became global economic powers, while the countries such as Spain, where the process was delayed, didn't attain the same economic heights.

VISION#4: STRATEGY

Between 2009-2014, when I served as Dep Gov for Financial System Stability, @cenbank achieved numerous feats. We stabilized and reformed Nigeria’s banking system after the global financial crisis, brought inflation down to 8%,
strengthened the Bank itself institutionally, and massively reformed the Nigerian payments system with digital/electronic payments and the introduction of the Bank Verification Number (BVN, introduced while I was DepGov (Operations). These achievements were not random/accidental.
They were the outcomes of corporate STRATEGY developed and agreed by its Board of Directors, the Committee of Governors, and the Monetary Policy Committee, all header ultimately by the then Governor, Lamido Sanusi (now Muhammadu Sanusi II, Emir of Kano. It was a collegiate

Vision #3. GOVERNANCE: A NEW PARADIGM (CONTD)

My vision for transformative leadership in Nigeria is based on what outcomes the leader would like to achieve by the end of a four-year term of office, his/her understanding of public policy,
national/international experience of best practice standards of good governance. Other elements of a clear vision include political and institutional will, preparation, and proactive readiness to govern.
The next President of Nigeria should:
- use the transition period between winning an election and swearing-in to finalize plans he/she should have already made to hit the ground running.
- Appoint key presidency officials such as Secretary to the Government , National Security

VISION #3: GOVERNANCE - A NEW PARADIGM

Good political leadership must be backed up by good governance — the process by which govts and public institutions conduct public life and manage public resources. The ability to govern is the test of leadership.
Governance is basically how decisions are made and implemented. “Leaders” who think they have earned that description because they’re good at vote-winning (or rigging) tricks of partisan politics but have no clue how to govern effectively, have kept Nigeria poor.
It’s time for Nigeria to be governed in a fundamentally better manner. How a leader governs is determined by his or her worldview, what kind of worldview, the absence of one, or how well developed such a worldview is. If it is narrow and sectarian, “governance”, for example,

VISION #2: THE WORLDVIEW STATE (CONTD)

What we need most in Nigeria is the emergence of a NATIONAL leader with a real worldview. This type of leader will necessarily have intellectual depth, philosophical reflection, and practical leadership ability to
inspire, motivate and provide guidance to Nigerians. In a radical departure from our present and past experience, he or she will be able to appeal to our enlightened, collective interest, to “the better angels of our nature”. Historically, great leaders have had this ability.
From America’s Abraham Lincoln to Britain’s Winston Churchill and Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, from China’s Deng Xiaoping to Malaysia’s Mahathir Mohammed, from Botswana’s Seretse Khama to Mauritius’s Ameena Gurib-Fakih. The countries led by these great men’s and women have been

Vision #2: THE WORLDVIEW STATE (CONTD)
Nigeria also needs to become a worldview state so that our government actually advances the REAL interests of 200 million Nigerians in all it does, rather than those of foreign countries or interests.
With this in mind, given the current levels of unemployment, poverty and population growth, does @NGRPresident ‘s announcement of a Visa on Arrival (VoA) policy for all Africans passes this test, especially when we consider the contradiction of @NigeriaGov border closure policy?
The first set of questions a worldview asks and answers are: why is the world the way it is? Who are we as a people (country/nation) in it? Relevant to Nigeria: why have we become the “poverty capital” of the world, how do we change this situation of failure to one of success?

VISION #1 : LEADERSHIP IS EVERYTHING ( CONTD)

Our leaders sow distrust by seeking power on the basis, not of competence or any vision, but of tribal/religious allegiance. They sow distrust of the Nigerian state and govt by their corruption in office.
Our leaders have exploited these divisions instead of liberating and educating their citizens. But, in order to liberate and educate, the leader must have the substance to do so. You cannot give what you don’t have. As the late Fela Kuti put it: Teacher don’t teach me nonsense!”
Leadership for Nigeria requires that the leader be able to rally his or her countrymen and women around a common goal or destiny that is higher than what divides us. This is different from the narrow views that fuel ethnic/religious chauvinism that dominates our politics.

Vision#1: LEADERSHIP IS EVERYTHING (CONTINUED)

Our minds determine whether or how we understand what leadership means or does not mean. Our minds determine what kind of worldview we bring to the task and responsibility of leadership. And our minds
determine whether we have, or can acquire, the character and competence if leadership.

Great leadership must be transformative. I always approach the subject of leadership with the end in mind: what will be said about my service after I have completed a specific leadership task?
Indeed, to envision more radically, what will be said at my funeral? (One should that that event will hold somewhere North if my 100th birthday!). I have applied this understanding to every leadership role in which I have had the privilege to serve. From national reconciliation
