I'm not watching #MarieAntoinettePBS and I wasn't going to nitpick the costumes; I don't think that's very interesting or useful. Historical films are not (nor should they be) documentaries, and I don’t want to come across as a cranky pedant or yuck someone else’s yum. HOWEVER…. Image
A few people have sent me this lewk and I'm going to do a 🧵, because it's something I've researched and written about extensively and because it shows how even well-intentioned, well-budgeted historical costuming can go off the rails when you don't HIRE👏FASHION👏HISTORIANS👏. ImageImage
"Whhyyyy is Marie-Antoinette wearing a cold-shoulder dress?" is not the question you should be asking. This is meant to represent a real gown called a grand habit. It was worn at court and only at court on formal and ceremonial occasions. At right is a Swedish royal wedding gown. ImageImage

As is my usual practice, I end each year with a thread reflecting on my activities on folukeafrica.com and lessons from the past year. Here goes!
My activity on the blog was affected by the fact that I was finishing my book. Which I finished. (Yay!) And is now available for pre-order (go for it!)

My first post of 2022 was a reflection on 2021, which ended with an encouragement to build the new worlds that we need to survive this one.

Heather Fontana had started thinking about the real-life #Bridgerton ball months earlier, seeing TikToks from the traveling event. When she saw an ad for the Queen’s Ball locally, she immediately called her best friend Yoanna Arenas, a fellow fan. latimes.com/entertainment-…
“We’re like, ‘Oh, we have to go,’ ... and then we’re like, ‘We’ve also got to get our boyfriends to go,’ ” Fontana said. “We got the tickets as soon as they dropped. I set an alarm and put notifications on my email and everything.” latimes.com/entertainment-…

Heather Fontana glanced at the curlers as she carefully curled her eyelashes. Her boyfriend, Ramon Perez, looked on. Her dress and gloves were laid out on the bed; a hoop skirt was nearby.

As someone trained in scholarly editing, I'm encouraging us to EXPLAIN the choice of an edition. After teaching the 18th century novel for over a decade (including w/digital 1st editions), most newcomers to early novels NEED the editorial support a modern edition provides. 🧵
A LOT of stuff is in the public domain -- including entire textbooks written to be Open Access, and some scholarly/teaching editions made freely available! By all means, use them if you've got them. Hell, part of my job (the @18thConnect part) is to help make more discoverable.
But for an 18th centuryist like me, using sites that make public domain editions of works available (bless them) means either the 1st edition of a novel (Hathi) or 19th century editions (Gutenberg). Neither will have explanatory notes or contextual info.

But that's just Prob 1.

🧵thread kate's hairstyle evolution throughout the season 🧵 #Bridgerton
okay so, I think everybody noticed that kate's hairstyle went through some changes while the season progressed, so here it is a compilation with a little analysis of all of them
okay so episode 1

🧵Mirrors in #Bridgerton season 2 🧵
this is an analysis on all the scenes with mirrors on the show. This is an interpretation, which it's full of subjectivity, meaning u can agree or not with this, this is just my pov on how i interpret these scenes
mirrors can have multiple meanings when they are present in different media, in bridgerton, i believe, it is used to reflect the truth, the soul and the self-reflection of the characters.
in this thread i have decided to focus on kate and anthony, and a little bit on edwina.
bc i focused on kate and anthony, there's also another meaning added with the mirrors, it's basically their twin flame energy.

okay but little thread of ep 3-4 #Bridgerton #bridgertonS2 about edwina and kate's dresses
so as many people noticed kate used a lot of bridgerton blue, and purples during the season and edwina used lots of pink, during these eps i found it interesting that even tho they kept that color palette here they also added more to the mix
in the beginning of ep 3 edwina is using a peach dress and later in the almost same shade in the pall mall but this one is more closer to white (in a way i kinda interpret it like the way edwina was ready for the proposal) ImageImage

The 2022 #MetGala was giving #GreatGatsby with all the feathered gowns. ✨ glmr.co/qyx7FE6
This year's #MetGala theme celebrated the Gilded Age of fashion, specifically the elaborate white tie formalwear the late 1800s was famous for. Sure, that might mean corsetry, diamonds, and bustles to some, but to others, it meant covering themselves in luxurious feathers. Image
Both #EizaGonzales and #HaileyBieber wore stunning white dresses with dramatic feathered flair to the #MetGala.

I’ve noticed that Newton the corgi is a big deal in the new season of #Bridgerton and I realised I’ve never seen a corgi mentioned in any sources from the 18th + early 19th centuries. It got me thinking… Newton the corgi with the Sharma sisters
Would people living during the Regency period even recognise a Welsh herding dog with short legs as a distinct type of dog? Would they have called it a ‘corgi’? Would a dog owner keep a corgi as a pet rather than as a working animal?
(Corgi megathread incoming)

Yesterday I read a very frustrating #Bridgerton interview that Said Some Things about corsets, and since today's pretty quiet (big snowstorm up here!) I thought I would do a thread on corsets of the late 18th-early 19th centuries.
Through most of the 18thc, the fashionable and respectable shape was one that could only be achieved with a foundation garment. As the latest Patterns of Fashion book shows us, there was a lot of craft that went into making a pair that truly fit an individual body. Raspberry silk damask stays...
By the late 1790s, the fashionable shape was *much* different. It was now important to look "natural", with soft curves all over the place. Stays that molded the bust were out. So ... what *did* they wear? Print of a John Hoppner por...
