Hey everyone! I did a thing today. #FPGA Recall that tweet by @fpga_dave? Well, that day I ended up sending a message to @LatticeSemi via their web form. I didn't actually expect a reply. However, they DID.
1/
And so I replied to that email, with a longer response expressing some of my thoughts of the state of the relationship with the open source community and an invitation to discuss in more detail. I didn't expect a reply there, either. But they DID.
2/
@LatticeSemi invited me to a conference call with 3 of their senior execs. I accepted! As I don't think I'm qualified to be the spokesperson for the open source community, I arranged for @esden to join me on the call. He was of course his usual charismatic & informative self

Y'all know how i feel about most of the editorial decisions made by the NY Times, since they published Kremlin propaganda & ***still*** employee Trump PR shill #MaggieDuranty, but running this by @DLeonhardt in 2017, was a good decision.

Welcome, @HarvardBiz.

We’ve been waiting for you to get here. It’s nice to see you.
Next stop:
Teaching you to ask better research questions.

Poor: What criteria do you use to choose a convenience store to shop at?

Good: Tell me about the last time you shopped at a convenience store.

Best: [at the store] What brought you here today?
It seems we still have a long way to go to teach business people how to listen to their customers.

We’ll get there.

Not everything you do will work.

That’s ok.

Don’t let it stop you from starting.
If everything you ever did worked as you expected it to you’re probably risk averse.

You aren’t picking challenging enough things to do.

You’re spending too much time coming up with a perfect plan.

You aren’t starting a lot of new things.

You’re comfortable.

Time for change.
Comfort and change shouldn’t ever be used in the same sentence.

See what I did there?

I took a risk. I broke a rule. I did something and risked failure.

I risked being misunderstood.

Get it?

THREAD. Four years ago, my wife and I made the final payment on a collection of debts that were sizable. It took us 22 months of intense focus. It was, in retrospect, perhaps the most valuable thing we’ve ever done for our marriage. #DebtFree #TBT #babysteps #ThursdayMotivation
The vast majority of this debt was student loan debt, potentially dischargeable through public service debt forgiveness. When I began telling people that we had decided just to pay it all off, some people thought it crazy to NOT coast for ten years and then watch it go away.
In retrospect, I believe we made the right choice. My wife’s dealings with her loan servicer were a regular pain. Payments were often not applied correctly, and even as we were making double/triple payments, dealing with them was a regular annoyance.

So folks, what package would you recommend for paralellising code in R?
I thought this would be simple based on previous experience with parallelising code but I am quickly realising it is not going to be simple. Blargh.
I have had a total turnaround and now think I do not need the paralell package.

I hope you are all enjoying this live commentary on the realities of science.
