In late June, with the defeat of the Japanese forces at Bessang Pass, the beleaguered troops led by Gen. Yamashita could no longer mount a counter-offensive. U.S. Gen. declared the complete liberation of Luzon on 28 June 1945.
The first direct contact of the Allied forces w/ Yamashita was established on 26 August. Prior to this, his whereabouts & leadership role among the trapped Japanese forces in the Cordilleras were only assumed. An intention to surrender 1st reached the Allied HQ in #PH on 24 Aug.

At the turn of the 20th century at the height of Western imperial expansion, it was a shared belief among Western powers that the tropics posed serious health hazards to them. The solution was to look for highlands where temperature was similar to their countries of origin.
European colonizers built "Colonial Hill Stations" located on mountains all throughout South & Southeast Asia where they served as recreational & tourist spots for Westerners, as well as seats of imperium at the periphery. The U.S. followed suit upon acquiring #PH in 1898.

Context: At 4:26 pm, a violent earthquake shook north and central #Luzon, lasting for about a minute. The epicenter was near the town of Rizal, Nueva Ecija, and it produced a 125 km-long ground rupture that stretched from Dingalan, Aurora to Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya. Image
