Small town politics are all conspiracies between guys who have been friends or known of each other since they were kids and the continuation of high school rivalries that never went away.

We call those conspiracies "phone calls" or "having beers" or "helping a friend."
The council in Morlock's town violated several laws in order to "help out their buddy" because most people will not put in the legwork that he did in order to win.

trying to put my finger on one particular thing that I really hate about cities, and I think it's this:

the illegibility of ownership / control / power

in the country, I own my 56 acres and I make the rules for it. Next door Doug owns his land, and he makes the rules for it. Next to him...etc.

Out front is the street, which is controlled by the DPW and the Police Department, and I know the names of the heads of both.

If I've got my tractor parked in front of my yard, moving rocks, and a local cop rolls up and says "get that out of the street", I can say "Talk to Chief Moore about that."

Maybe Chief Moore calls me back and says "I said for an hour, but you're blocking traffic, move it".

I should probably use this twitter account to tell people what I've been up to in the NH statehouse.

In NH bills are drafted by legislators, get turned into actual parseable legal English by the OLS (Office of Legislative Services), get sent to a committee, then come out of committee with either a thumbs up, a thumbs down, or a shrug.

Most stuff is a clear up/ down and >

goes to the assembled legislature on a "consent motion". These are usually passed by acclaim, without a tedious rollcall vote.

The idea is if a committee of 10 D and 10 R all liked it (or all hated it), then ...the house should just go along w the committee.
