A few foreign politicians recently made various comments on the #nationalsecuritylegislation for #HongKong. But I wonder if they had ever read through the Sino-British Joint Declaration before commenting, and if they can tell the detailed content of the #JointDeclaration.
The Sino-British #JointDeclaration is an important document concerning #HongKong's return to #China and relevant arrangements during the transition period.

It consists of eight paragraphs and three annexes.
The full text:

Paragraph 1 stipulates that 🇨🇳 resumes the exercise of sovereignty over #HongKong.

Paragraph 2 provides that 🇬🇧 restores #HongKong to #China. After #HongKong's return to #China, these two paragraphs have been completely fulfilled.

1. The British media and some politicians are interested in the draft decision on Hong Kong #nationalsecuritylegislation by the ongoing third session of China’s legislature- the National People’s Congress (NPC). Here is my thread on HK #nationalsecuritylegislation. @lisanandy
2. What is the draft decision: the draft decision on establishing and improving the legal system and enforcement mechanism for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (#HKSAR) to safeguard #nationalsecurity.
3. What has happened? The fourth plenary session of the 19th #CPC Central Committee clearly required establishing and improving a legal framework and enforcement mechanisms for safeguarding #nationalsecurity in #HKSAR.

THREAD. @NPC_Observer's analysis below highlights the serious legal challenges that the draft Decision presents to a conventional interpretation of the #BasicLaw & also the anticipated rationalizations for overcoming them, at least to the satisfaction of pro-Beijing advocates.1/n
It concludes, as I did in my blog below, that, given the structure of the PRC constitutional/legal system & the provisions of the Basic Law, the NPC Standing Committee has the power to say that the law is whatever it wishes it to be. 2/n

#OMG: Three statements by the #hkgov in one night:
1) liaison office in hk is covered by #basiclaw article 22
2) a statement replaced, and removed anything related to article 22
3) liaison office in hk is set up by the central gov, not those “departments” mentioned in article 22
Earlier on Friday, the liaison office already rebuted, arguing the two agencies were not circumscribed by Article 22 of the #BasicLaw, which states no department directly under the central gov may interfere in local matters.

Point to note:
#HKpolice can arbitrarily enter *Private Premises WITHOUT search warrant & consent of owner*
— which is a VIOLATION of #BasicLaw Art. 6: HKSAR shall protect the right of #PrivateOwnership of property.

#HKPOLICE IS OFFICIALLY ABOVE ANY #LAW
#HKPoliceState — NO ONE’s private properties are protected in #HongKong. State-authorised armed #HKPolice Force could make arbitrary search & arrest as they wish

#Capitalists can just leave the city. Who’s destroying #HongKong now?

Kneeling down, Hands up for #police search in a residential building lobby — those young people are LIVING there.

With 🇨🇳 #CCP’s authorisation of ENDLESS #POWER, these armed #HKPoliceTerrorists could literally do anything.
