Can PR save democracy?

"In the ERS’s analysis of different PR systems, the winner in every case was the minor party ..."

What was the really remarkable thing about the 2017 Election?

Was it Corbyn ? I suggest not - although he WAS clearly the catalyst ...

Was it Twitter ? Perhaps, although possibly not in the way that you imagine.

What was really, really remarkable, was the NUMBER OF ACTIVISTS.
BOOTS ON THE GROUND.

TWEETERS ON TWITTER.

THIS is the LESSON that is also remarkable, in that it is almost always FORGOTTEN. 😒

And it is also why the left are so crap at elections.

This was also the lesson of #BatleyandSpen

Forget it, at your peril ... 😒

In the aftermath of Labour's win in #BatleyAndSpen, and in particular the many comments thereon, a thread on the huge the challenges the party faces. 1/11
On all sides of the party there are many people who seek to offer prescriptions of what is needed to revive Labour's fortunes. Their views are strongly held. It seems impossible that evidence, of any kind, will shift them. 2/
The problem is that these strongly-held clear prescriptions, clash. Much of the comment fails to acknowledge that all the 'solutions' face loud, heart-felt opposition within the party. 3/

Labour's @kimleadbeater holds #BatleyAndSpen by 300+ votes despite 8000 lost to Galloway. “Our voters turned out in droves” official tells me. This was a triumph for @ShabanaMahmood and @HollyLynch5 . They led a fightback. 1/
2/ In #BatleyAndSpen Labour was winning back working class Tory voters from 2019; with a local agenda, a strong local candidate - but losing socially-conservative Muslim voters over Palestine and homophobia...
3/ Keir Starmer still has huge questions to answer. All the bad decisions that put the seat in jeopardy were taken in his office. He had to keep a low profile to achieve this, which is not ideal...

Things Labour could have done to keep #BatleyAndSpen:

@Keir_Starmer visits constituency with @zarahsultana has roundtable on islamophobia.

Starmer goes to Cleckheaton to say Labour got it wrong on Brexit

Give @jeremycorbyn back whip, get him & @johnmcdonnellMP up there (1/2)
Get @jon_trickett @IanLaveryMP & @AngelaRayner in there for several days saying they are bringing Labour back to the working woman and man.

Instead what we get is an insulated bunker, lack of communication & no strategy. He just looks like an extraordinarily bad politician.
It’s not rocket science, it’s just that the people running the party of opposition haven’t the first idea about very much and think a nice story in the New Statesman is reality. Just utterly delusional.

There's been considerable effort on social media to portray @kimleadbeater as much put upon by extremists. The centre left has rallied strongly round her.

But this Labour leaflet, in her name, appealing to (actual or perceived) UK-Pakistani hostility to India is desperate stuff
@ZacGoldsmith's appeal to Indian voters when running against @SadiqKhan in 2016 is widely perceived to have been a mistake.
In #BatleyAndSpen Labour now seem to be trying their own variant on the same approach.
The dirtiest British constituency campaign I can recall is Salma Yaqoob v Naz Shah in Bradford West in 2017.

The #BatleyAndSpenByelection is running it pretty close.
