This was *the* defining moment of the occupation of ottawa and likely a very important moment in the political lives of everyone present. Let’s talk about it. 1/
Full disclosure, I was out of the country when this happened, though I was invited to a similar blockade that ended up joining up with BB. There’s no question that, had I been in ottawa, I would have been there too. But this isn’t a thread about what happened on the ground. 2/
In terms of the practical gains of Billings Bridge, there isn’t much to say. The group of vehicles that was blocked was relatively small and did not consist of the regular crowd that occupied ottawa throughout the week. It didn’t inhibit the occupation or their supply lines. 3/

Thanks to @RosieBarton for having @ArielTroster and I on and thanks to everyone for their positive support.

We weren't on for too long so there were some points that I missed and I wanted to address here below (a thread 🧵) 1/8
1. The ONLY reason @OttawaPolice acted at all was because thousands of residents stood up and were organizing against the far-right in our city and calling out their complicity with the occupiers.

We proved that WE keep each other safe not police. 2/8
2. This was not a peaceful protest nor did it "turn into a far-right protest."

I'm not saying every single occupier was directly implicated but many especially the leaders were directly involved in hateful, racist and homophobic movements from the very BEGINNING 3/8

While #natsec law is outside my wheelhouse of expertise, my work regularly bumps up against such issues & has forever focused on Qs about coms, society & democracy. As such, I want to weigh in with a few thoughts of my own & hope that I have something worthwhile to say. 2/x
TLDR: While I disagree w/ her provisional conclusion, I do agree that we must be very vigilant that this precedent setting use of the #EmergenciesAct remains ltd in time, targeted in terms of geography, subject to Parliamentary review & snuggled tightly within the 3/

All convoy trucks at the Bank & Riverside blockade have now been sent on their way away from downtown, only after they were made to remove racist decals and flags from their vehicles. The people of Ottawa have won the Battle of Billings Bridge. #OccupiedOttawa #ottawa #ottnews
The other condition convoy drivers had to comply with before they were allowed to leave the blockade was to discard their jerry cans of fuel. The people have done far more to cut the fuel supply of the occupation than the police or any level of gov. #BattleOfBillingsBridge
