Each year I'm grateful. This year, despite all the adversity around us, I stand especially grateful. Accepted awards + started projects alongside people I admire. Essayed to grave moments and enduring histories. Finished #HowtoRaiseanAntiracist. Here are 21 highlights from 2021.
1) Jan. 11. After attack on the U.S. Capitol, Republicans and Democrats commonly proclaimed “this is not who we are,” which was a bald-faced denial. I wrote about the normality of this denial. “When have Americans commonly admitted who we are?”

Today on #BeAntiracist, @DavidTreuer joins me to talk about his call @theatlantic for the U.S. government to return the National Parks to Native peoples. 1/4 podcasts.pushkin.fm/be-antiracist-…
It was the focal point of our broad conversation about Native resistance to settler colonialism and racism. 2/4 podcasts.pushkin.fm/be-antiracist-…
We unpacked the racist trope of the "vanishing Indian," which was taught to me as a child. It's a trope as misleading as the “happy slave.” 3/4 podcasts.pushkin.fm/be-antiracist-…

Yesterday, Senate Republicans filibustered the For the People Act, escalating the GOP's battle against a multiracial democracy. This week on my podcast #BeAntiracist, I speak w/ @AriBerman, one of the foremost reporters covering voter suppression. 1/5

I've seen this GOP battle my entire adult life. I was a freshman @FAMU_1887 in Tallahassee during the 2000 election that was marred by voter suppression. Like other Americans in history, voter suppression opened my eyes to racism and set me on the journey to be antiracist. 2/5
There was so much to discuss with @AriBerman, especially as Senator McConnell says the electoral system isn't broken right now. The For the People Act "is a solution in search of a problem," he said. 3/5

Working on this new podcast has been uncomfortable and challenging. But I feel a sense of criticality, a sense of urgency to embark on this new project. 2/5

Over the next few weeks, we are highlighting states with stark disparities in COVID-19 outcomes by race and ethnicity in comparison to the White population.
The first group we want to show is Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders (NHPI). PICTURE OF RATIO OF COVID CASES PER CAPITA: NATIVE HAWAIIAN
Nationwide, NHPI make up less than 1% of the entire US population, but they are the group most likely to have contracted COVID-19 on a per capita basis.
Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, and Hawaii have the large disparities for NHPI groups compared to the White population. In the first three, NHPI are the least represented population, but these small communities have been severely impacted by the pandemic.

What we say about the races, what we do about injustice determines what—not who—we are in each moment. But to determine what we are, we must define what racist and antiracist are in a clear and consistent way. #BeAntiracist 2/

After defining these terms, we can apply them to ourselves, to the ideas we express, to the policies we support, and to our action and inaction when staring in the face of inequities. #BeAntiracist 3/

What happened to #GeorgeFloyd isn’t new. It won’t be the last time we witness the torture and murder of a neighbor because they were living while Black.

Not as long as we continue to raise children in a racist society. (1/)

As parents, pediatricians & educators we have an obligation to change our communities & country by moving our children from the mindset that being simply “not racist” is enough to one where we strive to be actively ANTI-racist.

We don’t need your horror, we need your ACTION(2/)
Teaching your child to not make racist jokes is teaching them to be “not racist”

Teaching them to call out when other kids make racist jokes & not just stay silenr or laugh along is teaching them to be ANTI-racist.
